February 13, 2014: The roof of the Journey of the Little Mermaid ride caught fire at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Thursday night.
Reedy Creek Fire said sparks from the 8pm Wishes nighttime fireworks show landed on top of the roof of the ride’s building. Disney officials said some of the sparks fell on the artificial foliage of the Voyage of the Little Mermaid ride and caught fire. The ride is located in the new section of Fantasyland.
The fire department said the foliage on top of the building caught fire, and witnesses said it spread to the rock work. The fire, which was contained to a 5-foot section of the roof, was put out by fire crews with a fire extinguisher. Disney officials say there is no structural damage to the building. No injuries were reported.
Witnesses also said the New Fantasyland area where the ride is located was evacuated for several hours. The ride reopened after 11pm.
