Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program (Fall 2013/Spring 2014) and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney. Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.

Mattel Drops Sea World Barbie

This is not a good role model for anyone.

This is not a good role model for anyone.

Living for a year in Orlando during our Disney College Program, we had many opportunities to visit Sea World, which was literally just a few miles down the road from our DCP apartment.

But, we didn’t.  I don’t think that we will go there again until they free the orcas and other large captive marine mammals like dophins.

We hope that the US government continues to rule against Sea World and their wildlife permit, making them return the wild-caught animals back to the oceans that they came from.

**********************

The SeaWorld barbie doll has been tossed overboard.

Mattel confirmed Friday that its licensing agreement with SeaWorld will not be extended. SeaWorld has come under fire for its treatment of killer whales, or orcas, after the sharply critical documentary “Blackfish” aired in theaters in the summer of 2013 and then on CNN in the fall of that year.

The toy giant had previously made SeaWorld-branded toys, including the Barbie Baby Animal Rescuer Playset and the Barbie Antarctica Penguin Fun Playset. Both featured a Barbie doll wearing a SeaWorld outfit and were sold on the animal theme park’s website.

A spokeswoman for Mattel did not elaborate on why the company decided not to renew its contract, which expired at the end of last year. But animal rights activists claimed it as a victory.

Attendance at SeaWorld parks, which are located in Orlando, San Diego and San Antonio, has declined since Blackfish premiered, and Southwest Airlines dissolved its 26-year-long partnership with the company.

The stock price also has gone into a tailspin, falling roughly 48% since the documentary debuted.

Blackfish recounts the 2010 death of veteran SeaWorld trainer who was killed by a whale named Tilikum. It challenges the concept of keeping killer whales for entertainment and suggests that Tilikum had been driven to madness by captivity.

SeaWorld has been pushing back against its critics, namely the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The company unveiled a new advertising campaign last month aimed at “setting the record straight on false accusations by activists who oppose whales and other animals in zoological settings.”

SeaWorld has accused PETA of spreading “misinformation” and “inaccuracies” about its treatment of animals. In a statement, SeaWorld said it was “disappointed” in Mattel’s decision. “Particularly disappointing is that the decision appears to be based on complaints from PETA, an extremist organization that works to close zoos and aquariums,” the company said.

PETA issued a statement on Friday praising Mattel for not renewing its deal with SeaWorld and calling on other companies to “drop this orca-abusing park like a hot potato.”

“With people worldwide appalled by SeaWorld’s cruelty, Mattel’s decision to stop promoting the park is a smart one,” said PETA vice president Tracy Reiman. SeaWorld did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Making a Magical Moment for a Special Guest

Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean at Adventureland

Making a Magical Moment for Guests:  It’s what we do!

This was posted on our DCP blog this morning….A Magical Moment for two Magic Kingdom guests.

I found your blog while looking for a Disney cast member. My 16 year old daughter with Down syndrome met Thomas the pirate at the entrance to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction on 4/22/15 between 7pm and 9:30 pm, if I’m not off on the time.

Thomas was wonderful with my daughter and gave her a ‘no strings attached’ paper good for a Mickey ice cream bar with a Disney princess showing at the top. Amber was so impacted by Thomas that on the way out that she asked to keep the slip and not get the ice cream so she could keep it to remember Thomas.

If you or someone else reading this knows cast member Thomas please thank him for teenage princess Amber and her mom for the priceless memory of that night.

Amber still talks of pirate Thomas and she put her no strings attached paper in her scrapbook to always remember him. G.C.

CP Thomas with his special Disney guest Amber.

We posted the message on the Spring 2015 facebook wall and within 5 minutes several CPs had tagged Thomas and said what a great CP he is!

We contacted the guest and gave her the email address to Disney Guest Services so that Thomas can get officially acknowledged at work.

When facing a 12+ hour day at the parks, who couldn’t use a Starbucks coffee to start the day out right??

There are 6 Starbucks locations on WDW property:

This Starbucks is HUGE and the line moves very fast!

This DTD Starbucks is HUGE and the line moves very fast!

Downtown Disney West Side (9am – Midnight) Opening on May 30, 2014, this unusual store is one of just four company-owned Starbucks in Disney properties around the world.  Besides being the largest Starbucks we’ve ever been in, it also has an interactive display that shows a “chalk” outline of customers that walk in front. Even cooler, the display connects to a sister store at the Downtown Disney property in Anaheim, CA.

The Downtown Disney West Side Starbucks now serves beer and wine (part of the “Starbucks Evenings” program) – a first for any Starbucks in the state. They also have a cool grass art work piece (see photo above) and a fire for cold nights. Great place to sit back and relax from all the disney craziness.

Update on Our Friends, Lori & Bill

Update on Our Friends, Lori & Bill

Bill at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Bill at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Their Go Fund Me link: http://www.gofundme.com/gd8jyk

To those who have already been so generous, Bill and I want to say thank you. The last 2 months have been very difficult. Bill has good days and bad days. He is still under Hospice care and as of Friday, April 24th, 2014, he is back on continuous care.

We are still in need of tremendous help with Bill’s medical bills. With the loss of my position at Disney due to taking a leave of absence to take care of my husband, I have lost all my income. Any donation would be so greatly appreciated.

We have Dr. Klein, who is pursuing to sue Bill for unpaid medical bill. This has been very hard to ask for anything from anybody. We are doing the very best we can at this very difficult time.

Bill’s funeral expenses will be covered, thank God for this. If you can find it in your heart just to give $5, $10 or $20 dollars, we would be so grateful. Dr. Klein’s bill is over $18,000.

You may even send the money directly to Dr. Klein if you like. Here is his address:

Dr. Elwin Klein

Lewiston, Idaho, 83501

Telephone (208)743-1168

Bill’s cancer is progressing. He is in tremendous pain every day. I pray that God will heal him completely. We so appreciate all the prayers.

There was a day not long ago that Bill was helping so many folks and touching their lives. We never, ever thought we would be in this boat ourselves. The blessing here is that we have each other.

God Bless,

Lori

Celebrating Earth Day: Living with The Land at Epcot

Jiminy Cricket (2)

Jiminy Cricket only comes out at DAK on Earth Day!!!

One of Elly’s favorite places at Epcot is ‘The Land’, the name of a pavilion that sits on the western side of “Future World”. The Land covers six acres, making it the largest Epcot pavilion. At the front of the pavilion sits a futuristic glass greenhouse.

The 2.5 million square foot facility is dedicated to human interaction with the land itself. It explores how humans can both use the land for their benefit, and how they can also destroy it. Future Technology in better preserving the land is explored in the pavilion, along with a focus on the celebration of the land itself.
