Will Disneyland Reopen in 2020?
Short Answer: Probably not.
Disneyland remains closed until further notice while the park awaits still-unreleased reopening guidelines from the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Other theme parks across the country, including Disney World, have reopened this summer with reduced capacity levels and enhanced sanitation measures.
California state officials are still reviewing how and when to reopen Disneyland as it heads into its sixth month of coronavirus closure based on COVID-19 health data.
California theme parks currently closed by the COVID-19 pandemic can reopen during Stage 3 of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s four-stage roadmap for reopening California’s economy. California is still stuck at Stage 2 and is experiencing a COVID-19 infection surge this past month.
Plans to reopen Universal Hollywood, Legoland and SeaWorld in June, and Disneyland in July were put on hold indefinitely by a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in California this summer that forced the state to rollback reopening plans.
As of August 12, 2020, California has experienced 600,000 confirmed cases with almost 11,000 deaths in just 5 months. Terrible.
“Theme parks are not permitted to open in California at this time, under current public health orders,” California Health and Human Services spokesperson Kate Folmar said via email. “We will continue to review health data to determine when and how theme parks may consider reopening at lower risk to staff and visitors.”
And, parents are not ready to take their kids to Disneyland. A new poll finds that 68% of American parents aren’t ready to take their kids to Disneyland – the Happiest Place on Earth – once the Anaheim theme park reopens.
The survey found that 78% of American parents want nothing to do with any U.S. theme park this year. Next summer looks more promising when more than twice as many parents (47% in 2021 vs. 18% in 2020) will be interested in visiting a theme park with their kids.
Disneyland Resort Cancels All Halloween Events
Disney officials announced that the Disneyland Resort’s annual hard ticket Halloween party, Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party, has been canceled. The event once known as Mickey’s Halloween Party was moved to Disney California Adventure last year.
Other canceled Halloween events at the Disneyland Resort are:
Haunted Mansion Holiday 2020
Main Street Pumpkin Festival
Halloween Screams Fireworks Show
Halloween Time at Disney’s California Adventure – Canceled
Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark
Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween
Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree
The California theme parks have been closed since stay-at-home orders were first issued in mid-March. Almost six months later, it’s still unknown when they will be allowed to welcome back guests.
Disneyland Resort plans to bring back all their Halloween events in 2021.
Downtown Disney reopened July 9, 2020 with additional health and safety measures including mandatory face masks, temperature checks, reduced capacity, social distancing, and enhanced sanitation. Promoting the health and safety of guests, cast members and the community is a responsibility the Disneyland Resort takes very seriously, according to Disneyland officials.
Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, which had been slated to reopen July 23rd, also remain closed indefinitely.

We went to Disneyland again in January 2020 before all the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
When we were there, it was was mostly cloudy (the “marine layer”) until noon and barely 70 degrees on most days! You needed a light jacket during the day and a heavier coat at night….it gets COLD! It even rained a few nights…January is the “wet” season in California.
We went to see all the Disney stars on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame! So fun!
We’ve written two books about our time working – and playing – as Disney Cast Members at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
