2020 Disneyland Blockout Dates for Cast Members

Will Disneyland Reopen in 2020?

Short Answer:  Probably not.

Disneyland remains closed until further notice while the park awaits still-unreleased reopening guidelines from the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Other theme parks across the country, including Disney World, have reopened this summer with reduced capacity levels and enhanced sanitation measures.

California state officials are still reviewing how and when to reopen Disneyland as it heads into its sixth month of coronavirus closure based on COVID-19 health data.

California theme parks currently closed by the COVID-19 pandemic can reopen during Stage 3 of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s four-stage roadmap for reopening California’s economy.  California is still stuck at Stage 2 and is experiencing a COVID-19 infection surge this past month.

Plans to reopen Universal Hollywood, Legoland and SeaWorld in June, and Disneyland in July were put on hold indefinitely by a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in California this summer that forced the state to rollback reopening plans.

As of August 12, 2020, California has experienced 600,000 confirmed cases with almost 11,000 deaths in just 5 months.  Terrible.

“Theme parks are not permitted to open in California at this time, under current public health orders,” California Health and Human Services spokesperson Kate Folmar said via email. “We will continue to review health data to determine when and how theme parks may consider reopening at lower risk to staff and visitors.”

And, parents are not ready to take their kids to Disneyland.  A new poll finds that 68% of American parents aren’t ready to take their kids to Disneyland – the Happiest Place on Earth – once the Anaheim theme park reopens.

The survey found that 78% of American parents want nothing to do with any U.S. theme park this year. Next summer looks more promising when more than twice as many parents (47% in 2021 vs. 18% in 2020) will be interested in visiting a theme park with their kids.

September 9, 2020: Look how thick the smoke is over Disneyland today from all the wildfires. Very poor air quality for walking around Downtown Disney.

Disneyland Resort Cancels All Halloween Events

Disney officials announced that the Disneyland Resort’s annual hard ticket Halloween party, Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party, has been canceled. The event once known as Mickey’s Halloween Party was moved to Disney California Adventure last year.

Other canceled Halloween events at the Disneyland Resort are:

Haunted Mansion Holiday 2020

Main Street Pumpkin Festival

Halloween Screams Fireworks Show

Halloween Time at Disney’s California Adventure – Canceled

Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark

Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween

Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree

The California theme parks have been closed since stay-at-home orders were first issued in mid-March. Almost six months later, it’s still unknown when they will be allowed to welcome back guests.

Disneyland Resort plans to bring back all their Halloween events in 2021.

Downtown Disney did reopen on July 9th, but Disneyland and the resorts did not reopen in July.

Downtown Disney reopened July 9, 2020 with additional health and safety measures including mandatory face masks, temperature checks, reduced capacity, social distancing, and enhanced sanitation.  Promoting the health and safety of guests, cast members and the community is a responsibility the Disneyland Resort takes very seriously, according to Disneyland officials.

dlrDisney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, which had been slated to reopen July 23rd, also remain closed indefinitely.

Disneyland Hotel Tip:  We always stay at the Del Sol Inn hotel across the street and just walk in.

We went to Disneyland again in January 2020 before all the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

When we were there, it was was mostly cloudy (the “marine layer”) until noon and barely 70 degrees on most days!  You needed a light jacket during the day and a heavier coat at night….it gets COLD!  It even rained a few nights…January is the “wet” season in California.

  1. So by chance do you know how the guest system works at Disneyland for a Disney World seasonal cast member now that the way tickets are distributed changed? I

    1. The process is still the same in that you have to go to Guest Relations with your company ID to get guest passes. The only thing that changed is that seasonal cast members must now work some hours (150 minimum) before getting guest passes, rather than having them automatically available to use soon after starting.

      1. Except that before you would take blue ID up to front gate and they printed off tickets for you and they didn’t count towards your guest passes because Disneyland and Disney world are on different systems. I was just wondering if that was the same or since they are on a similar system as disneyland cps now if it would be different.

  3. Hello and very helpful post. By any chance do you know if guest passes still work for retired cast members? I know they used to but I don’t know if the policy has changed. Thank you

  4. Thanks for posting the blackout dates!

The Shanghai castle is beautiful. Disney Land Shanghai is very easy to get to using the metro system in Shanghai. The train actually stops in Mickey town aka downtown Disney. I loved it.

  6. Any chance they would open up some of these days? Only reason I am asking is cause the apps shows this weekend is open. Am I doing some thing wrong.

  7. When I go to Disneyland with my self admittance pass can I still pass my family members with me ? Or do my family member count as main entrance pass even though I’m using my self admittance pass ?

    1. They aren’t published that far in advance, usually only 3 months.

This is March, so the blockout days for March-April-May have been published.
With Star Wars opening May 31st, expect guest pass blockout all of June-July-Aug and until after Labor Day in Sept.
Cast members should expect their self admission pass to be blocked at Disneyland all of June and maybe until after 4th of July.

  8. Hi there, I found your blog using Google while looking for a similar matter, it looks great and is very informative.
    I have bookmarked it

  9. Am I reading the website wrong? I just checked out the Block-Out Dates website, and it shows guest passes available for September for both parks.

    1. You don’t have the right boxes checked for Disneyland and California Adventure Park.
Disneyland is totally blocked out for using guest passes for all of September.
CAP has several blockout days scheduled in September for using guest passes.

Take another look at the blockout months in our blog.
      It is correct for September.
Sometimes, Disney Parks adds/removes blockout days so we always tell people to check before they go.

      Have a magical day!
