Meeting Disney Legend Richard Gerth at the Grand Floridian

January 2018: Resort hopping at the Grand Floridian.  It was a cool day so Richard was wearing his white gloves to keep his hands warm.

June 7, 2018 Update:

It brings us great sadness to hear of the passing of the legendary Disney cast member, Richard Gerth, who died this early morning (12:28am) at his home, just one week shy of his 93rd birthday.

We’re sure Walt was waiting for him in Heaven to be the first to greet him with a handshake and to say hello, and thank him for his years of service and for making magical moments for GF guests, especially all those Disney brides.

***

June 5, 2018:  We are hearing that CM Richard contracted pneumonia on Tuesday morning and is not doing well (cancer).  He has entered into hospice care.  We’re sending him our good wishes and some pixie dust this morning.

We’ve met him many times during our stays at the Grand Floridian and when we were cast members at WDW, and enjoyed talking with him.  He is a character for sure.

*****

Anyone who has ever visited the Grand Floridian Resort &  Spa has no doubt seen his familiar smiling face.

June 14, 2018:  Happy #93 birthday to cast member, Richard Gerth!

Disney cast member, Richard Gerth, who’s celebrating birthday #93 this year on Flag Day, June 14th!, has been greeting guests at the Grand Floridian since 1991.  26 YEARS!

He was proudly wearing his 25 Year Disney Service pin.  We asked him if he was going for his 30 year service pin with Disney and he said “maybe”.  We like his spirit!  🙂

In 2013, Richard was presented with the Walt Disney Legacy Award. This is the highest award any Disney cast member can receive. According to Robert Hitchcock of the Disney Parks Blog, “Richard has greeted thousands of guests, and assisted thousands of brides with wedding photos on their special day.”

The Purple Wall is kind of cool.  It’s located in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom near the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor in Tomorrowland.

The Purple Wall is a wildly popular spot to have your photo taken – or take a selfie – and then post it on Instagram.  Posting link: https://www.instagram.com/purplewallphotos/

purple Wall1

Tip: There are rarely guests by the Purple Wall.

It photographs really well. It’s all triangles in a medium lilac color that’s a flattering background color on everyone, there’s good indirect lighting there, and it’s just enough out of the way that you don’t have an audience watching you pose.

There was no one there when we were taking some photos.

So, take your time and get out your cell phone….and snap a few photos of you and your friends!

Action:  Next time you’re walking in Tomorrowland, stop for a few seconds at the #PurpleWall and take some photos.

Action Rating:  Worth it!

Adventures in the Animal Kingdom

Lions and Tigers and Strollers, Oh My!

This is not Caroline’s first time in the Disney College Program. Along with her sister, she was previously accepted into the program a few years earlier.  Back in Colorado, Caroline was wishing for a little more pixie dust to brighten up her life.  On a whim, she decides to apply to the exclusive Disney Alumni Summer Program.

Now that she’s back, things get wild.

Wild, as in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where Caroline is assigned to work in Stroller Rental.  While not the most glamorous position in the park, it’s often ground zero for humanity at its best and at its worst.

While Caroline makes many “Magical Moments” for deserving guests whose pixie dust has gone temporarily sideways, she also receives magical moments of her own through the friendships she makes, going to Disney cast member exclusive events, and all the spectacular dining opportunities at Disney World.

Caroline tells all – from the ins and outs of Disney’s secret training class called Traditions; to learning how to be a happy cast member during on-the-job training; to what it’s like to interact with fellow cast members and the guests who are ready to explore the most magical place on earth.

Join Caroline as she takes you on a wild ride through her adventures in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But be careful, it’s a jungle out there!
