Is Spain Coming to Epcot’s World Showcase?

epcot

September 2018: Viewing Epcot from the air. You can definitely see where the next country would go in on the bottom right next to Germany Pavilion.

When Epcot opened in on October 3, 1982, Disney Parks left room for 8 additional countries to be added to the World Showcase sometime in the future.

The 50th anniversary of Epcot will be on October 3, 2022 and Disney Parks has begun announcing plans for a $1 Billion Dollar renovation of Epcot.

One of the holdups of putting new countries in the World Showcase is that Disney makes the governments pay for the honor.  So, this eliminates poor African or South/Central American countries. [The Tourism Bureau of Norway was not happy when so much of the Norway Pavilion was changed over to the fictional country of Arendelle of Frozen.)

Current leading contenders for a new country are Spain and Australia.

Epcot improvements already announced:  A major new ride — themed to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the hit Marvel movie series — is planned for Epcot’s front section replacing the closed Universe of Energy ride.  The Mission: Space simulator attraction will also be updated and expanded.

rat

We are looking forward to this Epcot update the most!

A ride based on the Pixar film “Ratatouille” will be added to the park’s France Pavilion.  This ride is already a huge hit at Disneyland Paris.  The Impressions of France movie is being refilmed as the one currently showing is 35 years old and very dated.

Epcot will serve as a stop for the new gondola system called Disney Skyliner  connecting the parks to Disney hotels.

1981:  Unrealized Pavilions
Three pavilions were advertised in EPCOT Center books in 1981 and other material, but never built: Spain, Israel, and Equatorial Africa. From those books, Equatorial Africa seemed to have the most developed plans. Israel would eventually be featured as one of the countries at the Millennium Village.
Epcot World Showcase: Always Room for One More                                     Spain would fit very nicely next to Germany.

Spain
Spain was to have two attractions. The first attraction was a film on vacation spots in Spain. The second attraction was a ride themed around Spain’s heritage and arts. Market places and a waterside restaurant serving tapas (a finger food found in Spain) were also planned for the pavilion.

Israel
Israel’s landmark was to be a Menorah in the center of a courtyard. The buildings would be themed after old and new buildings from the area with ancient Jerusalem in mind. The attraction was to be an amphitheater with classical and folk music being performed. Olive and cypress trees would also be part of the pavilion. Kosher foods from the country would also be featured.

Equatorial Africa
Equatorial Africa refers to the group of African countries that lie along the equator. This pavilion was also referred to as the “African Nations pavilion” and the “Africa pavilion.” Equatorial Africa was to be located between China and Germany, where the Outpost currently sits.

Equatorial Africa was to have tree house-like architecture set in the dark jungle. Foliage, running water, jungle sounds and smells would be present, along with “animals” visiting a water hole. The animals would be created with rear-projected film.  The Heritage area was to be an African village with live entertainment with traditional performances. The area was also planned to hold a museum displaying fine African art.

Adventures in the Animal Kingdom

Lions and Tigers and Strollers, Oh My!

This is not Caroline’s first time in the Disney College Program. Along with her sister, she was previously accepted into the program a few years earlier.  Back in Colorado, Caroline was wishing for a little more pixie dust to brighten up her life.  On a whim, she decides to apply to the exclusive Disney Alumni Summer Program.

Now that she’s back, things get wild.

Wild, as in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where Caroline is assigned to work in Stroller Rental.  While not the most glamorous position in the park, it’s often ground zero for humanity at its best and at its worst.

While Caroline makes many “Magical Moments” for deserving guests whose pixie dust has gone temporarily sideways, she also receives magical moments of her own through the friendships she makes, going to Disney cast member exclusive events, and all the spectacular dining opportunities at Disney World.

Caroline tells all – from the ins and outs of Disney’s secret training class called Traditions; to learning how to be a happy cast member during on-the-job training; to what it’s like to interact with fellow cast members and the guests who are ready to explore the most magical place on earth.

Join Caroline as she takes you on a wild ride through her adventures in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But be careful, it’s a jungle out there!

The 65-year-old actor, who has portrayed Buzz Lightyear throughout all four films, appeared on The Talk on Wednesday in which he spoke about the highly anticipated animated film.

Asked by cohost Sara Gilbert whether he was hard at work on the beloved film, Allen said, “Yes, I gotta resist getting emotional. I don’t want to give it away, but this is an incredibly great story. It is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big, the idea they’ve come up with, I’m startled. I couldn’t even get through the last scene. I would love to be a Washington leaker.”

Before he could say anything more, he stopped himself, explaining, “I just can’t do it. I can’t give any more away. They’ve got great characters but a couple of scenes toward the end were really hard to get through.”

Bo Peep is voiced by Annie Potts. Tom Hanks, of course, voices Woody, while Tim Allen covers Buzz Lightyear.

IMG_6678

Dozens of beautiful lights sculptures floating all over the lake.

We finally got to see Rivers of Light and have to admit that we were not impressed.

Disney has a vast catalog of songs and melodies from 90 years of movie making, including all the great songs from The Lion King.  They used none of it for Rivers of Light.

River

All the beautiful optics you expect from a Disney performance are there: Lights, water fountains, huge flames, but the music and story is blah.

The whole show and all the music is not engaging.  There’s a clear disconnect between the beautiful optics of the colorful show with all its waterworks and flames and the storyline & music.

When this show first premiered for Disney VIP guests just before Earth Day 2016, it was a disaster and the whole thing was scrapped causing a 10-month delay in the opening.  All the original grand opening merchandise from April 2016 had to be destroyed.  The show premiered for guests in February 2017.

From the premiere:   Continuing the grand Disney tradition of innovative, after-dark entertainment, “Rivers of Light” combines live performance, floating set pieces, a soaring musical score, fountains and more in a celebration of animals and nature. The story magically unfolds on the broad natural stage of the Discovery River, conveying the uplifting spirit of an ancient and timeless lantern ceremony and filled with symbolism, storytelling and plenty of heart.

It really is a pretty show, it just needs a better storyline to bring it all together.

One our favorite TV shows was Prospectors on the Weather Channel, which ran for three seasons.  It followed four teams of prospectors in the Colorado high country looking for gemstones, mainly up on Mount Antero west of Colorado Springs.

Colorado Rhodochrosite crystals taken out of the Sweet Home Mine in Alma, Colorado.

Probably the two most famous gems on display are Diane’s Pocket of aquamarines and the huge red crystals of Colorado Rhodochrosite taken out of the Sweet Home Mine in Alma, Colorado.

Aquamarine is the official state gemstone of Colorado. Serious prospecting for aquamarine began in the Mt. Antero area in the late 1800s.

The best aquamarine finds on Mount Antero have been on the eastern side of the mountain at elevations over 12,000 feet. The challenges of looking for aquamarine on Mt. Antero are its altitude, weather, and remote location.

At over 14,000 feet in elevation, the weather can be cold, and the aquamarine hunting season is limited to about three months of summer. Wind, lightning storms, and frequent afternoon rains and hailstorms can be life-threatening at low temperatures and high altitudes.

Mt. Antero has grown in popularity with gem hunters after being featured on television prospecting shows. Today there can be a few dozen working claims at any given time on Mt. Antero, and visitors must be careful not to trespass on someone’s claim. Many claim holders are very unfriendly to visitors because they have put in a lot of sweat and effort hoping to find a nice cavity of high-value gems.

In addition to Mt. Antero, a few other Colorado locations are known to yield nice aquamarine crystals. These include Mt. White, which is connected to Mt. Antero by a high saddle. Nice specimens have also been found on Mt. Baldwin and Mt. Princeton, all peaks of over 12,500 feet and located nearby.

The most famous mine in the world for superb rhodochrosite crystals is the Sweet Home Mine, located near the community of Alma, Colorado. It was opened in 1873 as a silver mine and was worked on and off for silver until the 1960s.

Video of  Neil Patrick Harris at Epcot Candlelight Processional. Wonderful!!!

During our DCP program, we went on December 23rd – almost Christmas Eve! – and got to see the Candlelight Processional lead by one of our favorite country singers, Trace Adkins.  It was wonderful!  It really got us in the Christmas spirit!  🙂

The Candlelight Processional is a breathtaking retelling of the Christmas story in words and music complete with a 50-piece orchestra, choir and celebrity guest narrators. The narrator reads the Christmas story and favorite carols of the season are interspersed throughout the program.

The Candlelight Processional is held every night during the Christmas season. The first performance is on November 22, 2018 and then runs nightly through December 30, 2018.

There are three performances each evening at 5:00, 6:45 and 8:15 p.m. The length of the show is about 45 minutes.

Free ticket to see Edward James Olmos narrate from 2016 Candlelight Processional!

The performance is included in regular Epcot park admission at no additional cost. All Epcot guests are welcome to view this wonderful presentation.

The Candlelight Processional is held in Epcot at the American Gardens Theater in the American pavilion. This is an open air theater and, although there is a roof, you may get wet if it rains. Remember to dress for being outside. Although you are in Florida, it still may be quite cool on a December evening.

The choir consists of members of Disney’s Voices of Liberty (red & black attire), the Cast Member choir (green robes), and visiting high school and guest choirs (gold robes).

CM Update:  Cast member auditions for the 2018 Candlelight Processional choir were held this summer in July, and CMs were notified if they were selected as a participant by mid-August 2018.  Rehearsals started earlier this month.

Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.

Trump Re-Election Banner Hung at Magic Kingdom: Guest Banned For LIFE!

November 13, 2018 Update:
This loser showed up again – not even completing his 60 day pass suspension from the September incident – with yet another Trump 2020 banner and got himself banned from Disney World properties FOR LIFE.

Good!

The man who admits to flying pro-Trump banners at Walt Disney World has just been banned from Disney — again.

Dion Cini was captured holding a Trump 2020 banner on Splash Mountain. The ride picture reportedly came with a note from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office saying that Cini trespassed and his conduct is not welcomed on Disney property.

Cini says that after taking the picture, he was escorted off property and he is now banned from all Disney World properties, including the theme parks, resorts, and Disney Springs.

Really awful.  Shame on them.

Yesterday, two guests hung a Trump 2020 Re-Election Banner off the Main Street USA railroad station at the Magic Kingdom.

The banner was in support of the re-election of Trump with his tagline: “Keep America Great.”

WTF

Disney Security immediately responded and the guests were told to remove the offending banner. They were escorted backstage and removed from the park.

We’re hearing that they were AP pass holders and that their passes were suspended for 60 days over the incident.

Trump has caused nothing but headaches for Disney in 2017 and 2018.
