Adventures in the Animal Kingdom

Lions and Tigers and Strollers, Oh My!

This is not Caroline’s first time in the Disney College Program. Along with her sister, she was previously accepted into the program a few years earlier.  Back in Colorado, Caroline was wishing for a little more pixie dust to brighten up her life.  On a whim, she decides to apply to the exclusive Disney Alumni Summer Program.

Now that she’s back, things get wild.

Wild, as in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where Caroline is assigned to work in Stroller Rental.  While not the most glamorous position in the park, it’s often ground zero for humanity at its best and at its worst.

While Caroline makes many “Magical Moments” for deserving guests whose pixie dust has gone temporarily sideways, she also receives magical moments of her own through the friendships she makes, going to Disney cast member exclusive events, and all the spectacular dining opportunities at Disney World.

Caroline tells all – from the ins and outs of Disney’s secret training class called Traditions; to learning how to be a happy cast member during on-the-job training; to what it’s like to interact with fellow cast members and the guests who are ready to explore the most magical place on earth.

Join Caroline as she takes you on a wild ride through her adventures in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But be careful, it’s a jungle out there!

December 11, 2018:  Disney has broken ground on a $630 million residential community for participants of the Disney College Program, now known as Disney Internships & Programs, in Orlando, Fla.

In June 2018, ACC and Walt Disney World Resort announced their partnership, which is structured  where ACC serves as the developer, manager and owner of the new residential housing via a 75-year ground lease. 75 years!

flamingo-crossings

Flamingo Crossings: Located just off State Road 429 and near to the Western Way entrance to Walt Disney World.

The 10,400-bed community will be delivered in multiple phases, with the first phase scheduled to open next year in May 2020 and slated to be completed by May 2023.

Residents will have access to two 25,000-square-foot community centers connection and amenities including resort-style swimming pools, event and recreational lawns, fitness centers and social lounges. The community will feature a variety of floor plans with private and shared accommodations.

In addition, the development will include the Disney Education Center within the residential community. Program residents will also have access to academic resources, including group and private study rooms, computers with free printing, and free wi-fi.

flamingo_crossings_1

Flamingo Crossings fully built out by May 2023.

In February 2018,  Disney confirmed that all 2,600 planned apartment units were for the Disney College Program with any units not occupied by the program being leased to current Disney employees. The application also confirmed that the new apartments would house educational facilities within them. (So Disney University will be moving over there too.  We also expect some Costuming to move too.).

Disney currently owns or leases four local complexes to house its college interns with a total of 1,580 units.  The only one owned directly by Disney is Vista Way, while the others are owned by third parties.  These would be closed and sold when Flamingo Crossing opens in Fall 2020.

Castaway Cay Christmas - Christmas TreeDuck II

Welcome to Castaway Cay!

Disney makes a big deal out of all the holidays, but really goes all out for the Christmas season!

Disney’s Castaway Cay is the private island that Disney owns and that all their cruise ships sailing the Caribbean stop in at.

We stopped there on our Disney cruise aboard the Disney Dream.

Us going ashore for the day at Castaway Cay.

Even after a whole day out on the beaches enjoying the surf and sun, we weren’t ready to go back to the ship at 4pm.

Our 40% cast member discount also worked on Castaway Cay, so we stopped in the shops and picked up some t-shirts and special Castaway trading pins.

A perfect Caribbean day at Castaway Cay!

They warn you in the morning before you leave the Dream that if you hear the ship’s horns playing and you’re not back onboard, you’re late! Literally, the horns started playing as we walked up the gang plank!  We stayed until the very last minute because who knows when we’ll get a chance to return.

We won a foot and leg massage at the spa by playing bingo the day before, and we still had that to do before dinnertime!

So much to do on this cruise and so little time!

December 3, 2018 Update: Beginning this week, the Disney World Railroad will cease operation at the Magic Kingdom.  The train will remain parked at the Main Street Station for the near future.

train1

Guests will be able to take photos of the locomotive and sit in the cars.

  3. Roy O. Disney (named after Walt’s brother)
  4. Roger E. Broggie (named after the Imagineer who designed the Disneyland and Walt Disney World railroads)

Walt Disney World Railroad train will be parked at the Main Street Station (and not running) beginning on December 3, 2018 due to the Tron construction.

train2

You’ll be able to see the locomotive upclose.

Tomorrowland Speedway will be closed for the Tron construction through the first half of 2019. The attraction’s track will be adjusted to make way for Tron. The Speedway will reopen again in late summer 2019.

TRON won’t open until 2021.

The TRON attraction will occupy an entirely new area next to Space Mountain in Tomorrowland.

The WDW version of the coaster is based on TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. This thrilling attraction allows riders to board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for an exhilarating race through the digital frontier.

inspection

All DCP apartments are inspected monthly!

As soon as you’re accepted to the DCP, sign up for what type of apartment size you want and where you want to live like I did: Filling out my DORMS form.  (Be aware, there is no guarantee…I literally got my last housing choice!)

To help figure out what size apartment you will be able to afford during your program, remember that most CPs are paid $10/hr. before taxes and are only guaranteed 32/hrs. week.  [Certain roles like lifeguarding get a $1/hr. premium.]

Bonus Tip:  Disney Housing offers a free monthly Housing Event social for all residents. Lots of free food, music and dancing, and fun character meet and greets!

Our first DCP Housing event: August 2013

At our first DCP Housing event, we got to meet the characters from Andy’s Room (Toy Story) and they gave us free straw hats!

Flamingo Crossings

Disney is building 2,600 new apartments for its College Program and that could mean adios Vista Way!

In February 2018,  Disney confirmed that all 2,600 planned apartment units were for the Disney College Program with any units not occupied by the program being leased to current Disney employees. The application also confirmed that the new apartments would house educational facilities within them. (So Disney University would be moving too).

Disney currently owns or leases four local complexes to house its college interns with a total of 1,580 units.  The only one owned directly by Disney is Vista Way, while the others are owned by third parties.  These would be closed and sold when Flamingo Crossing opens in Fall 2020.

This would also greatly simplify the current CP bus routes from the four apartment complexes.
