One of the first things that you get on your very first working day at Disney World is your company name tag.
New cast members receive them at the end of Traditions class. Mickey Mouse, aka The Boss, himself personally hands your brand new company name tag to you!
It is a special and touching moment in the DCP program. Many new cast members tear up. :’) I can’t think of another company where name tags mean so much to employees.
All Disney name tags are your first name or nickname plus either your hometown or your college.
This is because our founder and CEO, Walter E. Disney, preferred that everyone just call him ‘Walt’.
Cast members get to keep their name tag forever.
If you work for Disney Parks long enough, you could accumulate 5 – 6 different name tags in different styles celebrating park anniversaries, new slogans, etc.
Caroline’s Name Tag Story:
Before my last workday, I went and specially ordered a brand new one because my regular name tag was missing all the golden sparkles after being accidentally left on my costume and put through the wash in our apartment at The Commons one too many times.
I can’t wait to display this on my desk at my future job.
I think I’ll always be a Disney Cast Member at heart! – Caroline ❤
Elly’s Name Tag Story:
Wondering what happens when you lose your name tag???
I lost my name tag less than 2 weeks into my first program.
After my first week of working, I turned in some of my costumes (Disney work uniforms) to be cleaned and checked out two new ones. But, I didn’t check the front of my red blouse and I accidentally turned in my shirt with my name tag still attached!
Apparently, it’s impossible to find and return it, since I called Costuming (laundry) and several other places and no one had seen it. 😦
It can take 7 – 10 days get a new one ordered.
Cast members can’t show up for work without a name tag on. It’s part of your costume.
If you don’t have one, you can get a loaner name tag from your manager. For guys, the name tag is usually Chris from Orlando, and for women its usually Alice from Orlando.
Wondering how to order a new name tag if you lose yours???
Well, wonder no more!
At all the Costuming locations, they have a little place where you can order a new one, it’s so easy!
I ordered a new one at Animal Kingdom Costuming and the nice cast member said it would take 7-10 days to replace and $5 would come out of my next paycheck. I was able to put whatever I wanted on it so, unlike my first one that said, “Elly + Colorado State University”, the new one I ordered will say: “Elly + Boulder, CO”.
I like that much better.
In the meanwhile, I still have to wear a name tag at work, and the managers give you a “loaner” one. The only options are ‘Chris’ for men and ‘Alice’ for women. So, I’ve been “Alice” at work for the past 2+ weeks.
It isn’t so bad, but it really confuses people when they’re doing a rotation or bumping me out for my break, they’re like, where’s this girl “Ariel” on the schedule, I can’t find her anywhere!
And, I’m like, ‘oh that’s me!’ standing there wearing my Alice name tag. (Everyone knows me as Elly at work.)
It’s like having a secret identity! 😉
We’ve written two books about our time working – and playing – as Disney Cast Members at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
