Epcot’s IllumiNations Ending Sept 30, 2019!

epcot Illuminations

March 2019: Watching IllumiNations with family for the last time!  IllumiNations has been the 9pm fireworks show a Epcot for nearly 20 years!

After two decades, “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” will have its final performance this evening, and the new, temporary Epcot Forever fireworks show will debut Tuesday evening, October 1, 2019 at 9pm.

The current nighttime show opened as part of the park’s Millennium Celebration in 1999 and, after the event ended in 2001, the popular nighttime show remained.

Celebrating the history of Epcot via its music, characters and vision, the new Epcot Forever show will use massive floating set pieces, custom-built LED panels, choreographed fountains, lights, pyrotechnics, fireworks, lasers, and special effect kites.  The “Epcot Forever” kites will be viewable at night thanks to unique built-in lighting.

Whoa.  Tons of Farewell IllumiNations merch this month at Mouse Gear.

The new Farewell IllumiNations merchandise arrived at Epcot this month.

The main logo for the merchandise features Mickey Mouse blowing out the World Showcase torch surrounded by fireworks. Of course, Mickey Mouse blowing out the torch is fitting because of the iconic opening of the show where the narrator blows out the torches at the end of the opening monologue.

The farewell collection can be found at Mouse Gear until early October 2019.

(Cast members can expect it to show up at Cast Connections by Nov. 1st.)

Three brand new film experiences are coming to Epcot.  The new films will all debut on January 17, 2020!

Awesome-Planet

Awesome Planet

“Awesome Planet” film is coming to The Land.  Disney announced that the new film will be coming to Epcot’s Land Pavilion in the Harvest Theater – the former home to the Circle of Life film.

“Awesome Planet,” is an on-screen exploration of the realm we call home.  It showcases the spectacular beauty, diversity and dynamic story of our earth with all the grandeur guests have come to expect from Disney Nature films.

With spectacular nature photography, immersive in-theater effects, and space sequences created by none other than Industrial Light & Magic (which provided the cinematic foundation for the Star Wars franchise), “Awesome Planet” will amaze Epcot guests and deliver an environmental message that will resonate far beyond its final scenes.

Wondrous China

“Wondrous China” a new Circle-Vision 360 film coming to the China pavilion

Guests will walk through the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest to view this new Circle-Vision 360° film. It’s a warm and appealing introduction to the natural beauty and people of China.

The film utilizes a new digital technology allowing it to be seamless. It’s rumored that a character from the Disney movie ‘Mulan’ will host the new film, we think maybe Mushu.

Why You Want to Stay at a Disney World Resort during a Hurricane

*****

hurricane22

Should you stay or should you go with a hurricane in the forecast???

Let’s take a moment and talk about what happens when a hurricane decides to take a Disney World Vacation.

If you find yourself stuck in Florida with a hurricane bearing down on you, you might want to consider booking a room at a Disney World Resort hotel.

dorian2

Every trash can at every Park and Disney Resort is tied down or filled with water ahead of the storm.  Think about those numbers for a minute!

Safety & Security

Disney World boasts some of the best infrastructure found in Florida’s Hurricane Territory. Every window and doorway of each building is built to withstand hurricane-force winds, up to major Category 4 winds.

Plan on arriving 12 hours before the storm as you will be asked to stay safely sheltered inside your home-away-from-home resort until the hurricane passes.

Disney’s Hurricane Rideout Teams will be activated to provide 24 hour service, entertainment, and security to guests. The cast members are asked to commit to a minimum 72 hour shift!  The resort’s exterior doors will be locked and some will be zip-tied shut.

sign Dorian

Signs advising Disney resort guests to keep exterior doors closed during Hurricane Dorian’s approach.

The gates in the parking lots will be down barring admittance.  (The security guards don’t man the guardhouses during hurricanes.)  Everything outside that could be blown around will either be removed or tied down.

hurricane

Everything that can be blown around or damaged in high winds is securely tied down.

hurricane1

When Disney moves the Grand Floridian car into safe storage you know a bad storm is coming!!!

The parking lots having relatively good drainage and you’re possibly less likely to experience flooding at a resort than at home.

We think you’re probably safer staying at Disney World than staying at home!

hurricane2

Don’t expect to be able to fly into or out of Orlando International Airport for the 12 hours before or 24 hours after a hurricane. Expect 1,000s of flights to be cancelled ahead of a storm.

Quality Care & Crowd Control

If your flight home or Disney cruise gets canceled and you find yourself stranded in the path of a hurricane, cast members will do everything in their power to find you and your family a room or two to extend your stay. There are over 36,000 rooms on property, all very nice, and some are very, very nice!!!

swansDisney has it’s own power plant and emergency generators all over the property.

hurricane flashlight

Hurricane Irma, Sept. 2017: Cast members went door to door in all the resorts and personally handed out flashlights to guests. They also handed out small boxes of cereal and shelf stable milk. Characters were in the resort lobbies meeting guests until the late evening.

During Hurricane Irma in Sept. 2017, cast members went door to door at the resorts and handed out free flashlights, along with single serving boxes of cereal and shelf stable milk in case the power went out overnight.  Nice!

Pet Friendly

Disney World compassionately adopts a very pet-friendly policy during hurricanes. Pets are welcome to stay in your room with you at no extra charge.

storybook3

Artist Point at Wilderness Lodge is normally a very pricey place to dine!

Buffet Food

To ease waits at restaurants, the quick service locations stay open in the resorts, along with the onsite convenience shops.  At least one restaurant will try and serve food buffet style to feed the stranded hordes.  During Hurricane Dorian in Sept. 2019, Artist Point at the Wilderness Lodge served delicious buffet breakfasts for just $12.

mickey hurricane

Mickey and Minnie in their safari gear visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge during the storm.

Magical Memories with Characters

Despite the pouring rain and the howling wind outside your window, you’re still in a Disney World Resort hotel. The magic doesn’t stop just because the parks are closed.

Expect unannounced character appearances in the lobby. Guests trapped in their hotels are treated to marathons of Disney Classic Movies and Mickey Mouse Cartoons, and cast members set up board games and scavenger hunts to keep the little ones entertained.

Yes, hurricanes are scary, especially for those who are visiting Florida for the first time. But, if you do find yourself facing one on your Disney World vacation, remember that you are in one of the safest, nicest, and definitely the most magical place on earth!

hurricaneDisney World’s Hurricane Policy

Check out Disney World’s official Hurricane Policy for more information regarding cancelling or rescheduling your vacation during a hurricane. During hurricane watches or warnings, this is where Disney will post updates at least 2x/day.

Disney Hurricane Policy:  If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area—or for your place of residence—within 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, you may call in advance to reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort Hotel Package and most room only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney.

Seeing Enchanted Tales with Belle

Enchanted-Tales-With-Belle

Enchanted Tales with Belle is in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom.

Enchanted Tales with Belle is a character meet-and-greet performance recreating part of the story of ‘Beauty and the Beast’.  There’s a Fast Pass for it and we highly recommend setting one up.

The magic mirror that tells the story of Belle meeting the Beast. This is the mirror that you step through from the cottage into the Beast’s Castle.

Guests start in Maurice’s and Belle’s cottage and get to see his workshop.  A magic mirror  on the wall tells the story of how Belle met the Beast.

You step through the mirror into the Beast’s Castle, and into the room with the talking Enchanted Wardrobe.

A few lucky guests are selected to be a magical object like a mirror, Mrs. Potts, the dinner plates, or soldier character.  Elly was selected to be a magical object during the last performance we went to!

belle3

The magical talking Enchanted Wardrobe.

Next, guests step into the Beast’s library, where they meet Belle and Lumière and experience an interactive fairy tale.  Guests (like Elly!) play the parts of the characters and become part of the story.  It’s a lot of fun!

belle1

The castle’s library.

The library only holds about 40 guests at a time; it’s very small.  We were lucky to be seated in the front row for the performance. (There are several rows of benches, but you can stand if you want.)

Belle

Belle talking with Lumiere on the fireplace mantel.  He moves his arms around as he talks just like in the animated movie.

belle2

We love Lumière!

Belle

Belle has the best gown of all of the Disney princesses.

It's a 20+ minute performance.  Belle was very good.

It’s a 15 minute live performance. Belle was very good and you get to talk with her after the show.

**************************************

Belle

Belle and the Beast in the library.  (The Beast does not make an appearance during the performance.)

Enjoy an interactive story adventure featuring Belle, Lumiere and you!  Be magically transported from Maurice’s cottage to the Beast’s library for a delightful storytelling experience. You’ll meet and spend time with Belle, and you may even be invited to play a part in the story.

A Tale as Old as Time

Step into Belle and Maurice’s quaint country cottage and marvel at the charming decor. Next, tour Maurice’s workshop, where you’ll see his inventive gadgets – and the special enchanted mirror the Beast gave to Belle. Say the magic words and the mirror comes to life!

Watch the story of how Belle and the Beast met, and then behold as the cottage’s walls disappear before your eyes and you are magically transported to the Beast’s castle.

Meet the Enchanted Wardrobe, who will help selected participants prepare for their role. Which part will you play? Guests of all ages may volunteer!

Take your places inside the Beast’s splendid library where Lumière, the talking candlestick, directs the action. When Belle appears, you’ll get a chance to play your part in her fairytale story – or just cheer along as you observe the fun!

The Haunted Mansion Holiday premiered at Disneyland in Fall 2001, merging Halloween and Christmas with “Nightmare Before Christmas,” with ride décor that would start Labor Day weekend, last through Halloween, and beyond the Holiday season into the new year at Disneyland.

Haunted

The wait line was super long…over 60 minutes when we were there in October. 😦

This movie overlay on the attraction runs from September 6, 2019 to January 6, 2020 making the attraction available for guests to experience for approximately one third of the year.

Are you kidding me??!!!

There’s tons of “snow” and jack o’lanterns all over the ride.

This fall, the Haunted Mansion is transformed with jack o’ lanterns and wreaths, terrifying toys and kooky characters from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s a creep-tastic classic you won’t want to miss!

Experience all your favorite frights plus scary seasonal surprises—all thanks to Jack himself. Sally, Oogie Boogie and other Nightmare nasties will also be on hand to wish you “Season’s Screamings!”

Haunted Mansion Gingerbread House

The 2019 Gingerbread House proudly sitting on the dining room table.  Not as tall as last year’s house.

The Gingerbread House in the Dining Room

One of the most dazzling and awe-inspiring features of the holiday attraction is the handmade gingerbread house in the dining room.

The gingerbread house has been a prominent feature of the Haunted Mansion Holiday since the attraction overlay’s debut in 2001. Multiple pastry chefs work together every year to construct the gingerbread house, many of whom have been a part of the tradition since its conception in 2001. Each house takes an average of two weeks to complete and includes a combination of gingerbread, powdered sugar, egg whites, lemon juice, fondant, and glitter.

Every year, pastry chefs create a fresh Gingerbread House version with a new theme.

Fast Facts about the 2019 Gingerbread House:

It’s 10 feet tall

It took 6 Pastry Chefs 13 days to make using:

30 lbs. of gingerbread

75 lbs. of powdered sugar

120 lbs. of icing

3 gallons of egg whites

Watch video of it’s creation: Making the 2019 Gingerbread House at Disneyland

You can see it for yourself when riding your doom buggy through the grand ballroom scene. The gingerbread house is always the centerpiece of the ballroom’s long table. Be sure to take a deep breath so you can smell the delicious sweet scent of gingerbread as you pass through the room!

How Disney World kept the Magic Alive for Guests as Hurricane Dorian threatened Florida

*******************

hurricane1

Storm’s a’coming!!!

As Hurricane Dorian charged toward the Florida coast over Labor Day weekend, the Walt Disney Company faced a tough dilemma: How to keep guests safe without ruining the magic of a typical – and expensive – Disney World vacation?

dorian-5

Hurricane Dorian, September 5, 2019.

The emergency “Hurricane Rideout” teams at Disney World sprang into action. Lucky for Disney World-goers, the Category 2 hurricane swept past Florida on Thursday, September 5th, bringing rain and wind but no damage to the theme park.

What happens at Disney World during a hurricane threat?

Disney World theme parks closed early on Tuesday, September 3rd afternoon (3pm) and reopened normally on Wednesday morning.

Cast members and security staff in the theme parks and at all the resorts on property tied down signs, landscaping elements, and lighting fixtures.

Every trash can at every Park and Disney Resort was tied down or filled with water ahead of the storm.

Anything that could become a projectile in a high velocity wind was removed or secured.

wilderness lodge

Pool area of the Wildness Lodge. Closed Tuesday afternoon as the storm approached.

Emergency storm operations began over the weekend at the Wilderness Lodge. Workers closed off all public balconies and removed all furniture from guest room balconies as well. Pools remained open through Tuesday afternoon. The lifeguards that usually manned the swimming areas were charged with entertaining guests as the pools closed. An impromptu game and activity station was created as cast members prepared to entertain and engage with the high volume of guests returning to the resort.

Special Character Visits at the Resorts

The Hurricane Rideout Team at the Wilderness Lodge was charged with staying voluntarily for the duration of the storm.  Cast members had to commit to staying onsite until Thursday, September 5th regardless of the impact Dorian had on the area. The resort was fully staffed and Disney characters roamed the lobby, engaging and interacting with guests.

Though rides and attractions weren’t available Tuesday evening, other amenities at the resort were. Up on the seventh floor, the concierge team at the Old Faithful Club planned for a busy night, preparing treats and decanting wine. Many guests opted to stay for additional nights to wait out the storm as 1,000s of flights into and out of the Orlando International Airport were cancelled. The normally quiet lounge and seating area was full with both kids and adults played board games, and keeping an eye on the flat-screen TV display showing Dorian’s progress up the coast.

The clatter of claws on the polished floor was heard throughout the lobby; evacuees from all over Florida arrived at the Wilderness Lodge, and pets were welcome to shelter at the resort during the storm. Several leashed dogs roamed the lobby, while a few unhappy cats howled from travel bags. The pets, like their owners, had arrived from the south, following the evacuation routes outlined when Dorian began to roll toward Florida. Other guests came from the Disney Cruise Line; the closure of the Miami seaport, which reopened Tuesday, meant many cruise guests were getting temporary accommodations at Disney World to ride out the storm.

Big Al Dorian

Big Al visiting Wilderness Lodge as guests waited out Hurricane Dorian.

Down in the lobby, a huge Jenga set and some oversize board games were set up, and lifeguards ran activities through the night for kids of all ages. Teens and young children abandoned their phones and mobile devices to take part in a game of hide and seek. Disney characters playfully engaged with guests and kept the lobby lively into the late evening.

Special Buffet Set Up for Guests

A few steps away, the character dining experience at Artist Point restaurant was ready to serve up Mickey Mouse waffles and other treats instead of their normal fare. This impromptu buffet ($12) was designed to eliminate waiting at the resort’s other dining locations.

Even the gift shop team was ready, rapidly restocking pantry items, filling shelves with reading materials, toys, and snacks to help pass the time.

Despite the closure of rides, Disney World worked to keep resort guests entertained. Many guests enjoyed the disruption of the normal hotel routine. The youngest guests were delighted with the change, making new friends and settling in for fun activities and snacks.

Guests that opted to stick out the storm saw a huge reduction in theme park crowds on Wednesday and Thursday with all the parks experiencing very light crowds.

Historically, tourist attendance drops within the five days after a major storm or hurricane. New arrivals typically cancel or delay their trip as air and ground transportation is disrupted.

Epcot’s Club Cool Closed on Sept. 8th

UPDATE:  Both Club Cool and Fountain View Starbucks closed September 8, 2019!

In anticipation of the huge 50th Anniversary Celebration planned for Walt Disney World Resort in 2021, billions are being spent at Epcot to upgrade the almost 40 year old park, which opened on October 1, 1982 and is really showing it’s age.

Some concept art drawing of the new Journey of Water that’s replacing Club Cool and Fountain View:

epcot-neighborhood

Coming in 2021: The 4 Worlds of Epcot – World Celebration, World Nature, World Showcase, and World Discovery.

Moana’s Journey of Water will be located in the new “World Nature” neighborhood.

Along with the World Showcase, there’ll be 3 new ‘World’s’ at Epcot’s entrance: World Nature, World Discovery, and World Celebration.

It looks beautiful – like Hawaii in Florida! World Nature

World Nature replaces Future World West and World Discovery replaces Future World East.  Both Future World East/West locations badly needed updating, especially Future World East.

Innoventions West and all the buildings on that side will be demolished as part of the new design before the end of the year.

Moana’s Journey of Water is coming to Epcot in late 2020.

This first-ever Disney Parks attraction will be based on the hit film, “Moana,” letting guests interact with magical, living water in a beautiful and inspiring tropical setting.
