When Walt Disney was Grand Marshall of the 1966 Tournament of Roses Parade

***

disney Walt Tournament of Roses

Walt and Mickey Mouse riding in the parade.

For 130 years – since 1890 – the Tournament of Roses has been America’s New Year’s Day Celebration, bringing the traditions of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game to Pasadena and to the world.

54 Years Ago:

On January 1, 1966, on a beautiful and sunny day, Walt Disney – along with his friend, Mickey Mouse – served as Grand Marshall of the Tournament of Roses Parade held in Pasadena, California.

Sadly, Walt would not live to see the 1967 TOR parade, dying of lung cancer on December 15, 1966.

Watch the video of Walt and Mickey riding in the TOR parade (start at the 4.24 mark): Walt as Tournament of Roses Grand Marshall

*****

And 50 years later to the day, Disneyland entered a beautiful float in the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade and won the Extraordinaire Trophy parade trophy!

dfl1 (2)

Disneyland’s 60th Diamond Anniversary Float was actually 3 floats tethered together.  Of course it had fireworks!

We watched the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2016.

The Disneyland float was amazing!  Adding Walt’s audio when the float was stopped in front of the grandstands and the characters all came out to dance was a very nice touch!

Watch 60 second clip:  2016 Disneyland Float at Rose Parade

What fun listening to Walt speak!

The Disneyland float won the Rose Parade’s Extraordinaire Trophy award:

Extraordinaire Trophy The most spectacular float including floats that do not retract to 55′ in length. Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration

It took approximately 650,000 flowers to make the Disneyland Diamond Celebration – Awaken Your Adventure float!

Short video of making the Disneyland float: Making the Disneyland Float.

Designed to honor the park’s 60th anniversary, the Disneyland float features a representation of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in its “Diamond Celebration” decor, as well as units devoted to “Frozen” and Star Wars Land.

When Disney World is Full: Guide to Park Capacity Closing Phases

****

December 25, 2019, Main Street USA at 9pm right before the fireworks show. Packed with guests!

December 31, 2019: New Years Eve crowd!

More on the story from USA Today: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/2019/12/31/disney-worlds-magic-kingdom-turns-away-guests-new-years-eve

Note that a park may be almost full at a Phase 3 or Phase 4 closure earlier in the day, and then drop back down to Phase 1 restriction when enough people leave and the parking lots open back up.

Always check with a WDW Crowd Forecast when planning your day.  The parks are open 365 days a year, but that doesn’t guarantee you admission!

The park least effected by crowds is Epcot.  Due to it’s size, guests can really spread out and it never reaches capacity.  The busiest day at Epcot is New Years Eve.

Ugh.

Here is a full breakdown of Walt Disney World’s Capacity Closing Procedures.

December 25, 2019:  Phase 3 at MK at 11am.

MK crowd estimate: 60,000.  Parking lot is full/closed.

Wall-to-wall guests, all attractions have extremely long wait times, restaurants are packed.

Phase 4:  Wall-to-wall guests, all attractions have extremely long wait times, all restaurants are packed.

Phase 4 Park Closing (Major Holidays:  December 24/25/31, January 1st)

Closed to all newly arriving guests, aka avoid the park at all costs!!!

Magic Kingdom crowd estimate: 75,000+. Parking lot is full/closed.

Park is at capacity and would be difficult to evacuate in case of an emergency.

No more guests are admitted until a significant number of current guests leave.

Comment:  This is our least favorite time to visit the Magic Kingdom.  We’ve done it, but it’s not been a very fun experience.  We’ve only stayed for a few hours.

We feel that Disney Parks has upped the capacity level for the Magic Kingdom in the past year or two, allowing even more guests in, over 80,000+ before closing the gates.  It’s just miserable and a lot of guests have rightfully complained about Christmas Week being too busy at the Magic Kingdom.

crowdAll four Disney World theme parks have reached some level of closure in the past. As the most visited theme park in the world, Magic Kingdom is the park most likely to experience capacity-based closures during busy times of year. Due to its size, Epcot is the least likely to close, and has not done so in recent memory. Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom rarely close, but their smaller capacities still make them more likely to close than Epcot.

To be specific, Magic Kingdom closes to further guests, on average, around 6 days per year. New Year’s Eve and July 4th are always two of them, often getting up to a Phase 3 closure. Two to four other days during Christmas week can be expected each year as well, although those rarely go above Phase 2. The years where Easter week falls during late-March or early-April can also see closures due to the Easter break/Spring Break overlap.

How to Stay Warm at Disney World When Its Cold Outside

****

snowing

It’s snowing on Main Street USA!  (Not really….it “snows” during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party nights)

A lot guests visiting Disney World expect nothing but warm and sunny weather for their visit.  Most of the time, that’s what they get.

But Orlando has about 3 weeks of cool, chilly weather every year, mostly in the December – January – February time period.

The daytime highs will only be in the 60s and the nighttime lows can fall into the 30s with freeze warnings overnight.

orlando

December 18, 2019: It is COLD at Disney World this morning! A cold front came through yesterday with lots of heavy rain. Dipping down into the 40s tomorrow night. Burrrr!!!!!

*****

IMG_5582

A chilly day at Epcot.  Figment was all covered in pink! The high for the day was only 52 degrees the day we were there!!  It was very chilly!

We have some advice if you’re planning a trip to Disney World this winter:

1. Check the weather ahead of time

Check the 10-Day Forecast before packing your suitcase!  If a cold front is expected to move through during your vacation, pack a jacket and – I’m not kidding – mittens and a hat! And maybe even a scarf!!!

Florida cold is like Florida heat.  Miserable!  Probably due to the humidity, a 50 degree evening at the Magic Kingdom feels like its 32 degrees!  Freezing cold!

2. Pack the correct clothing especially for after sunset

For weather in the 50s and 60s, pack at least 1 pair of pants and several long sleeved shirts.  If you plan on wearing a dress or skirt, pack some leggings.

You’ll need a warm jacket, preferably wind proof. A hoodie will come in handy.

Wearing flip flops in the parks is always a bad idea. Sneakers with socks are a much better choice for cold days!

3. Pack a blanket for the evening shows

We have seriously almost gotten frostbitten watching Fantasmic! on cold winter nights!

We’ve sat there in the freezing cold with a biting wind blowing, mixed with icy mist and water droplets from the water show.  MISERABLE!  How I wish we had a blanket!

If you have a little one and are planning on bringing a stroller, pack an extra blanket in the stroller for after dark.

christmas Epcot France Two Disney

Cookies and hot cocoa = yes please!  Notice we’re all wearing gloves and layered jackets.  So chilly!!!

4. Keep warm with hot beverages and warm snacks

You can get hot coffee, hot tea, and hot cocoa at all the Starbucks and Joffrey’s coffee stands at all the parks.

There’s a long list of warm snacks available at all the quick service restaurants and snack stands that we won’t  go into here.  Just look around.

5. It will be freezing standing outside waiting in line for attractions and even colder when the rides are moving.  (I’m looking at you Dumbo!)

This is when a windbreaker really helps.  Try to do all the outdoor attractions like Expedition Everest during the day and save the indoor attractions like It’s a Small World for the evening.  Try not to go on any outdoor rides, especially the wet ones like Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids, after dark.  You will regret it if you do!

6. Take a break inside every hour to warm up

Try not to make plans – and Fast Passes – for 4 or 5 hours of non-stop activity outdoors when it’s cold.

Take a break and do some shopping or grab a bite to eat inside.  Sit down for some people watching and warm up your chilled hands and feet.  See the long shows that you always skip like The Hall of Presidents.

****

winter1

The Disney princesses wearing their winter costumes.

One of the fun things about when it falls below 65 degrees is that the Disney characters all don their warm winter costumes, especially the Disney Princesses! They’ll wear these special costumes at their meet and greets and also for the Festival of Fantasy parade at 3pm in the Magic Kingdom.

See more photos of Disney Princesses here:  Disney Princesses in Their Winter Costumes
