Disney World Ending Complimentary MagicBands for Resort Guests

******

magic bands3

It was fun to get these at home before our trips and link them to our Fast Passes. They used to be just gray, but they added more colors throughout the years.

In January 2021, Disney will unveil an innovative new offering as part of the My Disney Experience app that will bring features of a MagicBand to your smart phone devices. With this new offering, complimentary MagicBands will no longer be offered to Disney Resort guests for new reservations with arrivals beginning January 1, 2021.

If you would like to use a MagicBand on your vacation and you are a Disney Resort hotel guest, you will have the option to purchase them at a discount. Guests preferring not to purchase a discounted MagicBand will be able to use the My Disney Experience app or a Key to the World card during their visit starting in January.

We prefer the decorated ones and probably have over 30+ MagicBands each!

MagicBands will still be offered for sale at many Disney retail locations and on shopDisney.com, and guests will be able to continue using them throughout Walt Disney World Resort.  MagicBands retail for $24.99 – $29.99 each.

Beta Testing a New Disney MagicBand Feature

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away (November 2013), we got a chance to Beta test a new feature they were adding to the MagicBand. This is our behind-the-scene story:

Beta Testing New MagicBand Feature

Caroline filling out the card on how many times we rode the rides before turning it back in for credit. 12:30am. (Our comp pass was on our guest card the next morning.)

Disney has been adding more and more features to the MagicBands since their roll-out earlier this year in 2013. They are currently beta testing a feature where if you are wearing the MagicBand on rides that take your photo, like Splash Mountain, the band will link your photo to your account as you pass by a RIF sensor in the wall while on the ride. It makes viewing and buying ride photos much easier.

Caroline and I thought this would be interesting and signed up to participate. And, we each earned a free guest park pass!

After the Magic Kingdom closed, we got to ride both the Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain rides three times each. What was really fun was that the lights were on inside both rides. The Haunted Mansion looks nothing like it does in the dark during a normal ride…so boring and ordinary!  (What looks like grass in the dark is plain, pale straw with the lights on!)

Another example, there is a huge plexiglass partition in the dining room scene to keep guests from throwing stuff down into the mansion’s dining room and help with the ghost’s projections. It’s angled so you don’t see it during a normal ride with the lights off in the gallery.  But, with the lights on, it’s right there.

Another place that guests throw things is at the end of the HM ride when a “ghost” hitches a ride in your Doom Buggy. I guess a lot of people throw stuff (mainly Magic Kingdom brochures!) at the ghostly image. There’s about a four-foot space between the Doom Buggies and the projection wall, and the brochures have to be swept out several times a day on busy days.

Dining room scene at Haunted Mansion.

Disney Postpones “Mulan’s” Premiere Again Because of Coronavirus Surge

*****

Mulan 2020

“Mulan,” Disney’s live-action remake that was originally scheduled to open March 27, 2020, but due to COVID-19 concerns shifted to a July 24th opening, has pushed back once again with a new theatrical release date of August 21, 2020.

“While the pandemic has changed our release plans for ‘Mulan’ and we will continue to be flexible as conditions require, it has not changed our belief in the power of this film and its message of hope and perseverance,” Alan Horn and Alan Bergman, co-chairmen of Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement.

Movie theater owners had been hoping to offer “Mulan” and director Christopher Nolan’s thriller “Tenet” in July to help lure audiences back to cinemas. Both films are now pushed into August, with “Tenet,” from Warner Bros., scheduled for Aug. 12th.

The theater business has been devastated by the coronavirus shutdowns that began in mid-March, laying off tens of thousands of employees and borrowing funds to stay afloat.  There have even been rumors that AMC may go bankrupt.

“Mulan,” a $200 million adventure film – not a musical – with a cast of Asian actors, was expected to be a blockbuster over Spring Break 2020.

Splash Mountain Will Be Reimagined with ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Theme

*****

splash

We love the music from The Princess and the Frog movie!  ♫♪♫♪♪ You got to dig a little deeper…♫♪♫♪♪.

Splash Mountain is getting a new look!

The company announced on Thursday that they would be reimagining the fan-favorite ride at both Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida with a theme based on the 2009 Disney film ‘The Princess and the Frog’, which features the company’s first Black princess, Tiana.

Disney princess Tiana

Princess Tiana

According to a Disney press release, this rebranding is “a project Imagineers have been working on since last year.” The ride’s storyline will pick up “after the final kiss, and join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.”

splash-mountain1“The retheming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today,” the release explains. “The new concept is inclusive – one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.”

bob-iger

Disney executive chairman Bob Iger.

At a shareholder meeting in March, Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed its exclusion from the Disney+ streaming platform, stating, “I’ve felt as long as I’ve been CEO that Song of the South — even with a disclaimer — was just not appropriate in today’s world. It’s just hard, given the depictions in some of those films, to bring them out today without in some form or another offending people, so we’ve decided not to do that.”

Splash-Mountain_Ziploc-Bags

The announcement comes weeks after several petitions began garnering attention on the site Change.org urging Disney to reimagine the theme of the log-flume ride. It is currently based on the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, which has long been criticized for its problematic portrayal of the post-Civil War South and for employing racist stereotypes.

splash3

Disney Fact: The actor James Baskett was not allowed to attend premiere of Walt Disney’s Song of the South in which he starred as Uncle Remus, in Atlanta, Georgia because Atlanta was racially segregated by law in 1946.

The petition titled “Re-theme Splash Mountain to Princess and the Frog,” gained particular traction, receiving over 21,384 signatures upon closing.

The petition read in part: “Disney parks should be a home for all to enjoy regardless of race, age, whatever your background may be . . . While the ride is considered a beloved classic, its history and storyline are steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes from the 1946 film Song of the South. There is a huge need for diversity in the parks and this could help fill that need.”

While no timeline for the update has been shared just yet, the press release indicates that “conceptual design work is well underway and Imagineers will soon be able to conduct preliminary reviews and develop a timeline for when the transformation can start to take shape.”

Disney is Postponing the Reopening of Disneyland

****

disneyland

Probably closed now until the fall.

June 24, 2020:  Disney announced today that they are delaying the phased reopening of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Disneyland, located in Anaheim, California, was set to welcome back guests on July 17th after being closed since March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Disney did not give a new reopening date for the Disneyland resort.

The company said that the State of California had indicated it would not issue theme park reopening guidelines “until sometime after July 4th,” according to a statement. “Given the time required for us to bring thousands of cast members back to work and restart our business, we have no choice but to delay the reopening of our theme parks and resort hotels until we receive approval from government officials.”

The news of Disneyland’s delayed reopening comes as coronavirus cases are spiking across the country, especially in California.

Disneyland Sleeping Beauty Castle

May 2020: Salute to frontline heathcare workers. The Thunderbirds flying over Disneyland.

California saw a single-day high with more than 7,149 positive cases reported Wednesday, according to data from the state Department of Public Health.

Disney still must negotiate with its unions before the parks can be reopened. The company said it has had “positive discussions” and has signed agreements with 20 union affiliates.

Disneyland resorts

No word yet when the hotel resorts at Disneyland will be reopening. If they follow Disney World’s reopening plan, the resorts will reopen BEFORE the theme parks.

The company has gotten pushback from unions that represent Disneyland workers about the reopening. An online petition on Change.org, called for Disney to schedule the reopening of Disneyland to a later date. That petition has over 50,000 signatures.

“Once we have a clearer understanding of when guidelines will be released, we expect to be able to communicate a reopening date,” the statement said.

Disney is implementing several new health measures to reopen safely and prevent the spread of coronavirus at its parks, including requiring employees and guests to wear face coverings. Disney also will reduce capacity at the parks and the resort will temporarily suspend parades, fireworks and other events that create crowds.

dlr

Announced June 24th:  Disneyland is no longer reopening July 17th.

From Disneyland.com/DTD website:

Welcoming You Back to the Downtown Disney District

A variety of shopping and dining experiences will begin to reopen at the Downtown Disney District on July 9, 2020, including the World of Disney store.

We have implemented new health and safety measures based on guidance from health authorities, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and appropriate government agencies.

For Cast Members, Operating Participant employees and Guests, there are 6 key things to expect when visiting the Downtown Disney District:

  • Limited parking and clearly defined entrances to the Downtown Disney District
  • Temperature screenings prior to entry
  • Face coverings are required for Guests ages 2 and older
  • Physical distancing measures, including physically-distanced queues and seating, and physical barriers at select locations
  • Temporary operations modifications, including reduced hours at select locations and the suspension of entertainment offerings and high-touch interactive areas
  • An increased focus on cleaning and sanitation, including the addition of hand-washing stations and hand sanitizers in key areas

Since many of these measures will be new, and may evolve, we want to be sure Guests, Cast Members and Operating Participant employees are aware of all these changes before they arrive. Additional measures and information may be shared closer to the opening date.

COVID-19 Warning

We have taken enhanced health and safety measures—for you, our other Guests and Cast Members—and we ask that you follow all posted instructions while visiting the Disneyland Resort.

However, an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 currently exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, senior citizens and Guests with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable.

By visiting the Disneyland Resort, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19.

The iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle will once again welcome guests to its towering spires and sprawling vistas when the Disneyland Paris resort begins its phased reopening on July 15th.

Come July 15th, Disneyland Paris will begin a phased reopening with visitors able to return to Disneyland Park, Walt Disney Studios Park, Disney’s Newport Bay Club hotel, and Disney Village.

paris5Disneyland Paris is continuing to prioritize the health and safety of cast members and guests.

paris1In line with French government and health authorities’ recommendations, the phased reopening of Disneyland Paris will present a deliberate approach with enhanced health and safety measures tailored to the park’s specific environment.

Reopening July 2020

Attractions that Won’t Open when Disney World Reopens in July

****

Reopening disney world1

Disney World is reopening July 2020, but not all the attractions will reopen.

When Disney World reopens July 11th/July 15th – which is now a Big ‘IF’ it reopens with the current COVID-19 spike Florida and specifically Orlando is experiencing – some shows will remain on hiatus.

Disney has already announced that all parades, firework shows, and nighttime spectaculars have been cancelled for the foreseeable future, which we take to mean at least until January 2021.

belle

No Beauty and the Beast shows for now.

These attractions will not open when Disney World reopens:

Magic Kingdom

Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station

Enchanted Tales with Belle

Frontierland Shootin’ Arcade

Main Street Vehicles

Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor

Stitch’s Great Escape

EPCOT

Advanced Training Lab

Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along

Bruce’s Shark World

Turtle Talk with Crush

Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage

Frozen Sing-Along

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

UP! A Great Bird Adventure

Festival of the Lion King

Each park is losing its #1 live show…Festival of the Lion King at DAK, Beauty and the Beast and Frozen Sing Along at DHS, the Indiana Jones Stunt Show at Epcot, and Enchanted Tales with Belle at the Magic Kingdom.

These are literally our favorite, “never miss”, shows at each park!!!

But, if you’ve seen these shows, you know the seating is on long benches in amphitheater venues that can seat over 1,000 people, so it’s impossible to maintain 6-foot social distancing.  And, for the cast member performers, singing is considered a high risk COVID-19 activity.
