Lunch with Cinderella at Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Magic Kingdom

*****

Cinderella Castle decorated with sparkling blue bunting for the holidays.

Cinderella Castle all decorated for the holidays with sparkling blue bunting. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor.

We’ve blogged about dining at Be Our Guest – the other expensive restaurant inside the Magic Kingdom – and now we turn our gaze to Cinderella’s Castle and dining at Cinderella’s Royal Table.

Cinderella's Royal Table

Cinderella’s Royal Table

Cinderella’s Royal Table History:

Cinderella’s Royal Table opened its doors in October of 1971 under a very different name. Oddly, it was named King Stefan’s Banquet Hall after Sleeping Beauty’s father, although it was located within Cinderella Castle with the Sleeping Beauty Castle being in Disneyland.

This was due to the fact that Disney Imagineers wanted to give it a regal name.  Since Cinderella’s father was unnamed (as was her husband, Prince Charming’s, royal father) and there were no well-known characters that met the royal criteria, the restaurant was named after Sleeping Beauty’s father, King Stephan.

It was not until April 28, 1997, after being open almost 26 years, that it was renamed to Cinderella’s Royal Table, ending the confusion of its name.

Very pretty inside!

It’s very pretty inside!

We like this restaurant better for lunch than for an overly-long dinner.  Breakfast is the best meal that they serve here and we recommend that meal.

We also wish that the food was a little lighter in keeping with a mid-day meal and hot, hot, hot and humid Florida days.  All the entrees served are very heavy and very calorie dense.

Disney should consider a more “California”-inspired menu for lunch! More salads, more sandwiches (club), more meals < 700 calories.

Cinderella makes your acquaintance in the majestic Grand Hall, before you ascend a spiral staircase to the banquet hall above.

Dine in a storybook setting surrounded by soaring stone archways, majestic medieval flags and spectacular stained-glass windows overlooking Fantasyland. During your time inside the castle, visit with classic Disney Princesses.

Tiaras and glittering gowns are optional, although young guests are encouraged to dress up for the occasion.

It is traditionally eaten on January 6th, during the celebration of the Día de Reyes (literally “Kings’ Day”), which commemorates the arrival of the three Magi or Wise Men.]

Mexican bakeries will be busy all day on Saturday January 4th 2020 selling Roscas de Reyes.

It’s a traditional sweet bread served for Día de los Reyes Magos or Three King’s Day. The oval shaped bread is topped with fruit and filled with cream cheese.

It symbolizes the visit of the three wise men who followed the star to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus, arriving on the 12th Day of Christmas, the Epiphany.

For Latin American families, the day is a big celebration. “It’s another Christmas for us,” said Laura Lechuga, owner of Panaderia Rosales. “You leave your shoe out again and hope for more presents,” she said.

The Rosca, or the traditional bread, also comes with a baby Jesus figurine hidden inside. Whoever gets the piece of cake with it, “it’s good luck for the entire year,” explained Lechuga.

Lechuga has owned Panaderia Rosales for over 40 years. She says they sell thousands of pounds in Roscas over the holiday weekend. “Every year the demand grows,” she said.

Haunted Mansion Gingerbread House

The 2019 Gingerbread House proudly sitting on the dining room table.

The Gingerbread House in the Dining Room

One of the most dazzling and awe-inspiring features of the holiday attraction is the handmade gingerbread house in the dining room.

The gingerbread house has been a prominent feature of the Haunted Mansion Holiday since the attraction overlay’s debut in 2001. Multiple pastry chefs work together every year to construct the gingerbread house, many of whom have been a part of the tradition since its conception in 2001. Each house takes an average of two weeks to complete and includes a combination of gingerbread, powdered sugar, egg whites, lemon juice, fondant, and glitter.

Every year, pastry chefs create a fresh Gingerbread House version with a new theme.

Fast Facts about the 2019 Gingerbread House:

It’s 10 feet tall

It took 6 Pastry Chefs 13 days to make using:

30 lbs. of gingerbread

75 lbs. of powdered sugar

120 lbs. of icing

3 gallons of egg whites

Watch video of it’s creation: Making the 2019 Gingerbread House at Disneyland

You can see it for yourself when riding your doom buggy through the grand ballroom scene. The gingerbread house is always the centerpiece of the ballroom’s long table. Be sure to take a deep breath so you can smell the delicious sweet scent of gingerbread as you pass through the room!

Buying Christmas Pickles at Epcot’s Germany Pavilion

******

DSC00448

The Christmas Pickle is sold at Epcot Germany. $12.95-$19.95

Something fun to buy at Epcot Germany for the holidays is a Christmas Pickle for your Christmas tree at home.

The Germany Pavilion has eight different shops including the holiday-themed Die Weihnachts Ecke shop (this is where you can buy the Christmas Pickle ornament); Stein Haus (drinkware and home décor); Weinkeller (wine shop); and Das Kaufhaus, which carries soccer apparel and accessories.

Each shop is filled with wonderful Germany-inspired gifts and treasures.

The Christmas Pickle Tree stays up and lit all year round.  There’s a sign on the wall explaining the Christmas Pickle “tradition”.

Die Weihnachts Ecke (The Christmas Corner) room usually has 5 or more fully decorated Christmas Trees up year round, covered in blown glass ornaments from Germany.

tree1******

Christmas Pickle Backstory:

In the early 1890s, Woolworth department stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany that were in the shape of various fruits and vegetables, including a pickle.

Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a “very old German tradition” and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the tree on Christmas Eve, buried deep in the tree’s branches.

DSC00447

A whole tree of Christmas pickles!

The first child to find it on Christmas morning is rewarded with one of three things: the privilege of opening the first gift, the receiving an extra gift from Santa, or being granted a year of good luck.

We were friends with an ICP from Germany who worked at Epcot’s Germany pavilion and he said that he never heard of the ‘Christmas Pickle’ before coming to America, and neither had any of his coworkers!  In fact, a recent survey revealed more than 90 percent of Germans have never heard of the “Christmas Pickle”.

The quirky custom known as Weihnachtsgurke, or Christmas Pickle, supposedly has its roots in Germany, apparently most Germans haven’t ever heard of it. The New York Times reported that out of 2,057 Germans polled, 91% were unaware of the legend.

The pickle ornament tradition is actually most popular in the Midwest. Perhaps the large number of German immigrants in the region, including in Berrien Springs, Michigan, a German settlement and the self-proclaimed “Christmas Pickle Capital of the World,” has something to do with that. Berrien Springs even hosts an annual Christmas Pickle Festival.

green pickle

It seems like this sparkly pickle would be easy to find on Christmas morning…$19.95

Bottom line, the Christmas pickle is actually a fun American Christmas tradition, not a German one!

But, we still like the idea of getting an extra present on Christmas morning!
