Day 1: Check-in Day at Chatham Square apartments.

Check-in only took 30 minutes, and he was done and in his apartment.

He’s living in Chatham! Same place we lived during our 1st program!!!

Apartment 16308

He’s in a 2 Bedroom/2 Bath apartment on the 3rd floor for 6 guys.  The 6th guy never showed up, so there are currently 5 guys in the apartment.

Each bedroom has a bunk bed and a twin bed. The apartment seems roomy because of the high ceilings.  Their apartment doesn’t have a balcony.

Disney Housing fairly recently converted what were 2 bedroom/4 person apartments into 2 bedroom/6 person apartments just a few years ago.

It did not decrease the weekly rent per person by very much.  His weekly rent is $106/week.

Christian came from the farthest away.  His roommates are from: Kentucky, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.  All from the East Coast and they all drove their cars down to the program, something that Christian wanted to do too.

A few photos of his apartment:

Smoking Update:  All DCP apartments have been smoke-free for years, but now Housing is limiting where you can smoke on property (i.e., one of our roommates used to smoke out on the balcony. That’s no longer allowed.)  We think this is a good thing!

May 16, 2017 email from Housing regarding smoking on property.

Now if they see or smell any sign of smoking in the apartment at all, the whole apartment will FAIL the monthly inspection!  😦

As soon as you’re accepted to the DCP, sign up for what type of apartment size you want and where you want to live like I did: Filling out my DORMS form.  (Be aware, there is no guarantee…I literally got my last housing choice!)

To help figure out what size apartment you will be able to afford during your program, remember that most CPs are paid $10/hr. before taxes and are only guaranteed 32/hrs. week.  [Certain roles like lifeguarding get a $1/hr. premium.]

New DCP Housing ‘Flamingo Crossings’ Nearing Completion

2,600 apartment units. That does NOT look like enough parking spaces for 10,000 DCP participants!

The new DCP housing development for cast members doing an internship program with Disney Parks is almost ready to welcome its first DCP participants.

The $630 million residential community will have 10,400 beds (2,600 residential units), two 25,000-square-foot community centers, two resort-style pools, and more.  It replaces the current 4 DCP apartment locations.

The first participants are scheduled to move in this May 2020, with a phased occupancy rollout lasting for the next three years.

In addition to housing, the development will include the Disney Education Center (replacing Disney University), providing unprecedented integration for program participants to engage in ‘uniquely Disney’ learning experiences and the ability to earn up to nine credit hours in college coursework. Program residents will also have access to resources needed for academic success, including group and private study rooms, computers with free printing, and Wifi.

“The college students who have been part of our college and internship programs have helped make magic for millions of our guests for more than three decades,” said Kristi Breen, vice president of Disney International Campus Programs.

Mike from BlogMickey stopped by and checked out the construction progress:

Flamingo Crossings

Disney is building 2,600 new apartments for its College Program!

In February 2018,  Disney confirmed that all 2,600 planned apartment units were for the Disney College Program with any units not occupied by the program being leased to current Disney employees. They also confirmed that the new apartments would house educational facilities within them.  Disney University would be moving to the new complex too.  If would be great if Magic Kingdom Costuming moved there too.

Disney currently owns or leases four local complexes to house its college interns with a total of 1,580 units.  The only one owned directly by Disney is Vista Way, while the others are owned by third parties.  These would be closed and sold when Flamingo Crossing opens in Summer 2020.

This would also greatly simplify the current CP bus routes from the four apartment complexes.

These will all be shut down and replaced by Flamingo Crossings over the next 3 years.

Two Girls and a Mouse Tale

by Elly Collins & Caroline Collins

Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program (Fall 2013/Spring 2014) and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney. Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.

WDW Park Attendance & DCP Internships

WDW Park Attendance & DCP Internships

2008:  118,000,000

2009:  119,100,000

2010:  120,600,000

2011:  121,400,000

2012:  126,479,000

With the increase in Park attendance, Disney is expanding their DCP internship program. But, where to put all the additional Fall interns? No additional housing is being built.

DCP Housing announced their plans today. The plan is for the 3- and 4-bedroom units to get bunk beds and platform beds with drawers underneath. The 3 bedroom units, which now house six DCP interns will house nine interns in the fall, and the 4 bedroom units currently with eight interns will house ten interns in the fall (maximum allowed by Florida housing codes). Talk about roommate problems!!!

The girls are glad they are leaving in May! Having just four other roommates last Fall caused plenty of drama.

New, furniture including bunk beds and refrigerators! refrigerators!

Disney College Program Expenses

dcp

Living and working at Disney World in the Disney College Program

I’ve been thinking it would be a good idea to post how hard it’s been try to live on a Disney minimum wage, part time “salary” for the past 2 1/2 months!

Disney pay varies depending on your role. Because both Elly and I are Merchandise, we get paid $7.79 an hour. I definitely took a pay cut coming to work for Disney in Florida because Colorado’s minimum wage is $8.04 and I was making $8.50/hr. in Boulder.

As of right now, I’m usually scheduled to work around 35 hours each week. I get paid around $270/wk, but then Disney immediately takes off $100/wk for rent. A lot of people think that it’s too high, but $400 a month for a fully furnished apartment with all utilities included (cable, electricity, water, trash, AC/heating, and a land-line phone) is considered really cheap in Boulder!  It’s a pretty good deal in Orlando.

Then there’s tax withholding. With my other two part-time jobs I had through University of Colorado-Boulder this year, I’ve been able to claim a ‘tax exempt’ status because I don’t make nearly enough money to pay any taxes working only about 12-20 hours/wk. But, since I’m working more hours at WDW, I have to pay Federal taxes. So, about $55/wk gets taken out for that.  (I don’t pay any Florida state taxes.)

The final total amount I get paid each week is about $115.

Publix

Publix: The BEST grocery store in Florida and it’s right by our apartment!

That doesn’t seem too bad until we go grocery shopping! No matter how much we buy or which store we shop at, our total bill is always $200. Elly and I like to switch off for paying since we share all our food. We are not the type of people to nickel and dime things, so it is never a big deal.   🙂

Gas in Florida

Gas in Florida is about $3.50/gallon now.

We also need to fuel up the car (Nissan Sentra) about once every two weeks. But, we like to fill it up every week even though it’s only half a tank, just to be on the safe side. It’s typically around $30 a fill, with gas around $3.50/gallon.

Even though we get into all the WDW Parks for free and we get discounts on most food and merchandise, it is still pretty expensive if we want to get lunch or a snack while we are walking around! Because Elly likes to cook, and to save on money, we generally eat all our meals in and take our lunch to work. When you’re on a budget, you can forget about going out to eat or doing anything fun like seeing a movie or playing mini-golf!

Last semester, I worked more than 20 hours a week, along with going to school full time, to save up for this program.  That was a good idea because I am currently in the hole for more than double the amount I get paid by Disney each week!

People warned us in their DCP blogs and on Facebook about how poor we’d be while participating in the Disney College Program. I didn’t really believe them until I looked at my bank account! Yikes!

Living and working at Disney ain’t cheap! But, it sure is FUN!  🙂
