Hurricane Olivia and Disney’s Aulani Resort

Hurricane

Hurricane Olivia’s path straight through the islands.

Olivia projected to Pass Through Hawaiian Islands as a Strong Tropical Storm With Heavy Rain and Strong Winds; Tropical Storm Warning Issued

For the second time in 3 weeks, another hurricane is expected to make landfall in Hawaii.  Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii due to the prevailing tradewinds.

Hurricane Olivia is churning in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii according to the National Weather Service.  The hurricane is currently a strong Category 2 storm with 110 mph winds and likely will make landfall as a tropical storm on either the Big Island or Maui on Wednesday.

Olivia is located more than 400 miles east-northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, moving westward. Olivia is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph, and is expected to keep on this path until it makes a gradual turn toward the west.

It’s approaching the islands from a completely different direction than last month’s Hurricane Lane, which dumped record amounts of rainfall on the Big Island.

A high surf warning remains in effect for east-facing shores of all islands, CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB reports.

Olivia will sweep through Hawaii Tuesday night and into Wednesday, potentially bringing flooding rainfall, strong winds and pounding surf.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige issued an emergency proclamation for the counties of Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao, Kaua‘i and the city and county of Honolulu on Sunday to free up resources and money to expedite preparation and mitigation efforts ahead of Olivia.

The island of Oahu remains under a tropical storm watch.

AUGUST 23, 2018

Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa is operating under normal conditions as we continue to monitor Hurricane Lane closely.

hurricane-lane-path-track-map-update-thursdayjpg-16f5a046a9f28e48With an estimated 1.5 million people in Hawaii and highly valuable property, Hurricane Lane has the potential to do a great deal of damage.

Models predict the Category 4 hurricane with 130mph winds will make landfall between late Thursday night and Friday, bringing with it torrential downpours and dangerous winds.  All schools have been canceled for Thursday and Friday. Expect delays at all airports.

Even with Hurricane Lane not making landfall, the wide extent of the hurricane can still cause significant destruction.

“We don’t know where this storm will hit,” said Gov. David Ige, who issued an emergency proclamation to speed the state’s response. “Everyone should be prepared.”

In 1992, Hurricane Iniki made a sharp turn and veered into Kauai as a Category 4 storm. It killed six people and left about $3 billion worth of damage, leveling more than 1,400 homes and leaving more than 14,000 with at least some level of damage. Power and phone lines were out for weeks throughout the island, and crops like banana and papaya were destroyed.

Lane rainfall

Hurricane Lane dropped at record 52″ of rain on Hilo causing major flooding.

Adventures in the Animal Kingdom

Lions and Tigers and Strollers, Oh My!

This is not Caroline’s first time in the Disney College Program. Along with her sister, she was previously accepted into the program a few years earlier.  Back in Colorado, Caroline was wishing for a little more pixie dust to brighten up her life.  On a whim, she decides to apply to the exclusive Disney Alumni Summer Program.

Now that she’s back, things get wild.

Wild, as in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where Caroline is assigned to work in Stroller Rental.  While not the most glamorous position in the park, it’s often ground zero for humanity at its best and at its worst.

While Caroline makes many “Magical Moments” for deserving guests whose pixie dust has gone temporarily sideways, she also receives magical moments of her own through the friendships she makes, going to Disney cast member exclusive events, and all the spectacular dining opportunities at Disney World.

Caroline tells all – from the ins and outs of Disney’s secret training class called Traditions; to learning how to be a happy cast member during on-the-job training; to what it’s like to interact with fellow cast members and the guests who are ready to explore the most magical place on earth.

Join Caroline as she takes you on a wild ride through her adventures in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But be careful, it’s a jungle out there!

Waimea Falls Park is beautiful and very scenic.  A true slice of Hawaii.  Very green with lots of vegetation.

The 45-foot falls. After a rainstorm, the water pours over the falls.

falls3

We didn’t bring our bathing suits for swimming, but it was closed for swimming because of the recent rain.  Very few people were at the falls.

We didn’t go swimming because it was closed that day as the Falls were flowing too rapidly from a recent rain storm. There were No Swimming Today signs posted at the visitor center.

It was pretty empty up at the Falls, probably because it was a no swimming day.
Life jackets are required to swim near the Falls and you can rent them at the Outpost. There are changing stalls there, but no restrooms.

Roundtrip, the hike is 3.5 miles.  There’s a lot to see along the way, with tons of Hawaiian and other botanical plants, all in bloom.

Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.
