Nightmare Before Christmas Overlay at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion

Long, long wait lines for this attraction…always get a FastPass!

We got to see the “Nightmare Before Christmas” version of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion on our last visit to Disneyland and did NOT like it!

We are so glad that they don’t do this movie overlay at Disney World’s Haunted Mansion! Especially not for 4 months out of the year!

It’s ugly!

Are you ready for a tour of the eerie estate’s merry macabre makeover – and to meet some real holidays spirits – from September 6, 2019 to January 6, 2020?

Take your seat in a gloomy Doom Buggy for a spooky tour through this decorated house of happy haunts.

The Haunted Mansion Holiday premiered at Disneyland in Fall 2001, merging Halloween and Christmas with “Nightmare Before Christmas,” with ride décor that would start Labor Day weekend, last through Halloween, and beyond the Holiday season into the new year at Disneyland.

Haunted

The wait line was super long…over 60 minutes when we were there in October. 😦

This movie overlay on the attraction runs from September 6, 2019 to January 6, 2020 making the attraction available for guests to experience for approximately one third of the year.

Are you kidding me??!!!

The Gingerbread House in the Dining Room

One of the most dazzling and awe-inspiring features of the holiday attraction is the handmade gingerbread house in the dining room.

The gingerbread house has been a prominent feature of the Haunted Mansion Holiday since the attraction overlay’s debut in 2001. Multiple pastry chefs work together every year to construct the gingerbread house, many of whom have been a part of the tradition since its conception in 2001. Each house takes an average of 16 days to complete and includes a combination of gingerbread, powdered sugar, egg whites, lemon juice, fondant, and glitter.  Every year, pastry chefs create a fresh Gingerbread House version with a new theme.

You can see it for yourself when riding your doom buggy through the grand ballroom scene. The gingerbread house is always the centerpiece of the ballroom’s long table. Be sure to take a deep breath so you can smell the delicious sweet scent of gingerbread as you pass through the room!

2019 Día de los Muertos – Day of the Dead Celebrations at Disneyland and California Adventure Park

The traditional skeleton display for the Day of the Dead celebration.  Very festive.

From September 6th through November 3rd, 2019:  Frontierland in Disneyland will feature a musical trio of iconic skeleton figurines called Calacas, brightly colored flowers, and other decorative items celebrating the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

IMG_4426

Día de los Muertos explained: It’s a time of joy, not sadness, to remember family and friends who have passed.

Traditionally, the Day of the Dead – known as “All Souls Day” – falls on November 1st, the day after Halloween (All Hallows Eve).

We finally got to see it during our last trip to Disneyland.  We saw it during the day (above) and then we returned at night to see it after dark (below):

Día de los Muertos at Disneyland

Celebrate Día de los Muertos in Disneyland to honor the art, symbols and traditions of this age-old holiday.

Join the festivities as Frontierland hosts a special tribute to the Day of the Dead. This annual Mexican celebration remembers loved ones that have passed while embracing an eternal connection.

Now through November 3rd, Zocalo Park will feature a musical trio of iconic Calacas—skeleton figurines—as well as brightly colored flowers and other decorative items commemorating the occasion.

Things You Should Know Before You Go:

Both parks at the Disneyland Resort have Day of the Dead commemorative areas that will be in place until November 3rd. The one at Disney California Adventure is the more extensive.

This event only takes place in Disneyland Resort, not at any of the other Disney parks. The celebration’s origins are based in Latin America, although the popular conception is that it’s a Mexican holiday,  Día de Los Muertos is celebrated in many regions.

Celebrating in Disneyland

  1. Check out the display at Zocalo Park in Frontierland where oversized sculptures, marigolds and paper banners known as papel picado provide some much-needed color to the area. Rancho del Zocalo restaurant next door offers Mexican food, in case you’re in the mood. (By the way, the word zocalo means “town plaza” in Spanish.)
  2. The female Day of the Dead skeleton you’ll see with the big hat and fancy dress has an important role in Mexican history. When Mexico was fighting for its independence from Spain, a Mexican journalist and printmaker named Jose Guadalupe Posada published a series of etchings around 1910, including one with the skeleton called a calavera. Famed muralist Diego Rivera dubbed her “La Catrina” and put her in one of his murals. She became a Mexican national symbol and is often seen in resplendent costumes during the Day of the Dead festivities.

Celebrating in Disney California Adventure

  1. The main festivities for the holiday revolve around Paradise Gardens in Disney California Adventure, where they’ve set up a Plaza de la Familia that’s fun and interesting. There’s a craft area where kids can make free masks and a commemorative wall where anyone can write a memory of a loved one and hang it up to create a festoon of memories.
  2. The small, round “The World of Coco” indoor pavilion explains the meaning of Dia de Los Muertos through the lens of the movie, “Coco.” In the 2017 film, the 12-year-old protagonist, Miguel, builds an altar in honor of his late musical hero. It’s pleasant to see a space like this used for something other than the usual kind of Disney merchandising.
  3. Several times a day, visitors can see a show in the plaza called “A Musical Celebration of Coco” that cleverly uses life-sized puppets to depict Miguel and his villagers. This colorful show includes folkloric dancers in colorful costumes and the Grammy-award-winning local group, the Mariachi Divas.
  4. Take a photo in front of some colorful winged paintings or the wall-sized Mexican Tree of Life in the Plaza de la Familia, which is covered with paper mache La Catrina figurines.
  5. Try some Disney Resort Halloween treats: Coco Conchita – traditional Mexican sweet bread topped with the orange colored sugar, filled with dulce de leche and finished with Miguel chocolate decoration – available at the Paradise Garden Grill at Disney California Adventure.
  6. Check out the Mexican food menu at the Paradise Garden Grill, including the traditional Día de los Muertos Pan de Muerto, Mole Verde con Pollo, Pan Dulce Conchita and a special “Coco” cake. Note that the Pan de Muerto is a nod to the traditional Mexican bread of the dead, which has special figures baked into it.
  7. In Cars Land, Ramone’s House of Body Art has an altar set up to honor the gone-but-not-forgotten Doc Hudson.

New this year, you can take photos and make new memories with Miguel when he appears between shows at a beautiful artistic mural entitled “Recuérdame” (“Remember Me”). Named after the iconic song from the film, the evocative mural depicts the themes touched on by the Storytellers of Plaza de la Familia in their show and celebrates Miguel’s beloved family in Santa Cecilia and the Land of the Dead.

At Paradise Garden Grill, sample traditional Mexican dishes, including Traditional Tamale Plate with chile red pork tamales with golden rice and black beans, and Tacos de Estilo Callejero: a trio of sirloin beef tacos with pickled vegetables, golden rice and black beans. Another option is Tortitas de Papa – vegan crispy potato cakes with sautéed spinach, ranchero salsa, golden rice and pickled onion salad. pan-de-los-muertos

Pan de los Muertos is available this week at Paradise Garden Grill.

Pan de los Muertos (Spanish for: Bread of the Dead) is a sweet roll traditionally baked in Mexico during the week leading up to the Día de Muertos, which is celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd, with November 1st being Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

The sweetened soft bread is shaped like a bun, often decorated with bone-shaped phalanges pieces. Pan de muerto is eaten on Día de Muertos, at the gravesite or, alternatively, at a tribute called an ofrenda.  As part of the celebration, loved ones eat pan de muerto as well as the relative’s favorite foods.

Bread of the Dead usually has skulls or crossbones engraved on it. It is believed the spirits do not eat it, but rather absorb its essence, along with water at their ofrenda, after their long journey back to Earth.

The bones represent the deceased one (difuntos or difuntas) and there is normally a baked tear drop on the bread to represent goddess Chimalma’s tears for the living. The bread is represented in a circle to portray the circle of life and is topped with sugar as life is sweet.

This special bread is available at CAL’s Paradise Garden Grill and can also be found in most Mexican grocery stores in the U.S.

Sneak Peek at Disney’s Jungle Cruise 2020

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt at D23 convention yesterday. August 23, 2019: “We wanted to make a movie that was big, that was epic, that had romance, big comedy, big action, but most importantly . . . it’s got me,” The Rock said to the crowd as he introduced details about the upcoming “Jungle Cruise” film, a live-action movie inspired by the Disneyland and Disney World attractions of the same name.

Watch new Disney’s Jungle Cruise trailer: Jungle Cruise 2020

Disney’s Jungle Cruise was originally set for release on October 11, 2019, but its release has been pushed back to July 24, 2020. The film stars Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson in this 1930s period adventure.

Based on Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise ride, the movie takes a group of travelers on a small riverboat cruise through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles, but with a supernatural element.

Set in the 1930s during the Great Depression, a riverboat captain named Frank takes a scientist and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find the Tree of Life, which is believed to possess healing powers. All the while, the trio must fight against dangerous wild animals, and a competing German expedition.

Principal photography began on May 14, 2018, in Hawaii.  Filming wrapped on September 14, 2018.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson riding on the Jungle Cruise

April 10, 2017:  From Dwayne Johnson’s Instagram account

Surprise! Once I committed to our Disney partners to make the movie based off the JUNGLE CRUISE ride, I wanted to dive head first into the research.

So, I headed to Walt Disney World and surprised tourists by commandeering the JUNGLE CRUISE boat.

It was a GREAT day on the river. Learned a lot… for example, it takes approximately 12.6 minutes for all the passengers to get over the shock of me jumping on the boat and thinking I’m a DJ look-a-like. One passenger even said, “Oh the real Rock is much smaller than this guy”. I threw his ass off the boat.

Jokes aside (and yes, with me as the Cruise Skipper there will be an abundance of puns) this is such an amazing, fantastical and cool world to build out. Best part about this surprise research day was knowing how FUN of an experience we’re gonna work hard to create for families around the world. That’s the part that gets my excited the most.

The movie. The ride. The experience.

It’s the cruise of a lifetime. And trust me, you’ll want me as your Skipper. Just don’t forget to bring the Skipper’s beer.

(I think the lady to my right is snapping a pic of my bootaaaay.)

Improvements in Adventureland Continue Ahead of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Opening Next Week

Star Wars2

May 31st, Disneyland: Grand opening of Star Was: Galaxy’s Edge.

The new Adventureland sign at Disneyland is up!

April 19, 2019: The Adventureland arch is down, replaced by the small sign on the right. Already the entrance into Adventureland feels bigger.

adventureland1

April 15, 2019:  You can see all the wasted walkway space. The new Adventureland sign will be much bigger, maybe 2x.

April 2019:  Disneyland has filed a permit to demolish the current Adventureland sign and widen the pathway in preparation for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge  crowds.

According to the permit, Disney will replace the sign with a new one that doesn’t rely on footers in the walking space. The exact wording in the permit calls for a “demo [of] existing marquee and install new with footings and sign”.
This widening should increase the opening into Adventureland by at least 10 feet.
By comparison, look how wide the Adventureland entrance is at the Magic Kingdom:

Stormtroopers will be on constant patrol enforcing 4 hour visit limit.

If you’re looking to visit a galaxy far, far away at the end of this month, you’ll want to note that you only have about four hours to do so.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is set to open in Disneyland on May 31 and in an effort to avoid overcrowding, the happiest place on earth will use Stormtroopers to enforce the 4-Hour time limit.

The Stormtrooper-enforced time limit is just one of the precautions the park plans to use to avoid potential crowd chaos upon its opening.

star wars1Disney engineers and landscapers have widened walkways in Adventureland and improved queuing systems throughout Disneyland in an attempt to accommodate more visitors.

Galaxy's Edge

May 22, 2019: Meet the cast members of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening team.

During the first three weeks of the attraction’s opening, guests will be required to make reservations for each member to enter the Star Wars land.

Guests will receive colored wristbands coordinating with their reserved four-hour time slot. Once that time window expires, Stormtroopers will patrol the park and politely tell visitors to leave so new visitors may enter.

“Four hours is a long time in the land,” Kris Theiler, vice president of the Disneyland Park says. “Most guests are going to find that they’re ready to roll after four hours.”

What happens if guests refuse to leave the park after their time slot expiration? Well, Disneyland is keeping pretty quiet on that part…maybe use “The Force” on them?

Park visitors who booked rooms at any of the three Disneyland Resort hotels automatically received reservations, while those who booked a stay elsewhere are required to reserve their slot online.

Reservations opened on May 2nd for the May 31st – June 23rd opening and the opening period dates were filled within two hours.

Following the 3-week “soft opening” time frame, Disneyland will launch a virtual queuing system similar to FastPass where guests can sign up for a boarding group.

Each boarding group will have a two-hour window in which guests can enter the Star Wars land, but no time limit once guests are inside.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is opening this summer at both Disneyland and Disney World

Disney announced this month that Disneyland Park in California will open its Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction at Disneyland ahead of schedule on Friday, May 31st, while Disney World would open its Star Wars-themed area at the end of summer on August 29th.

Star Wars

March 2019: Stars Wars: Galaxy’s Edge under construction at Disney World. Still so much to do!

The massive 14-acre Star Wars section of Disneyland’s park will be the largest single-themed land expansion ever, according to a press release from Disney, and will have restaurants – including the park’s first-ever cantina – as well as rides and other experiences to offer customers a fully-immersive experience.

edge2

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is massive!

“Guests can become part of the story as they sample galactic food and beverages, explore an intriguing collection of merchant shops and take the controls of the most famous ship in the galaxy aboard Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run,” a previous press release stated. The park has also revealed that this new experience is a “choose your own adventure,” with each choice potentially impacting a guest’s visit.

Phase Two of the massive fully-immersive land, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, will be opening later this year.

star wars 5

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

On opening day for Phase One, you’ll be able to live your own Star Wars story and take the controls of the most famous ship in the galaxy aboard Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, sample amazing galactic food and beverages, and explore an intriguing collection of merchant shops and more.

And for Phase Two opening later this year, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, is the most ambitious, immersive and advanced attraction ever imagined that will put guests in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance and will blur the lines between fantasy and reality.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Guests planning to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland park in California between May 31 and June 23, 2019 will need valid theme park admission AND will be required to make a no-cost reservation, subject to availability, to access the land.  It is expected that the Star Wars Land will reach capacity every day.

Information on how to make a reservation will be available soon on Disneyland.com. Guests staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels during these dates will receive a designated reservation to access Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during their stay (one reservation per registered guest); valid theme park admission is required.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will not be available during Extra Magic Hour or Magic Morning at Disneyland Park. [The area will be closed during EMH.]

Disney FASTPASS service and Disney MaxPass are unavailable for attractions in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

A reservation will not be offered or required to experience Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at  Disney World this time.

March 15, 2019:  All lodgings at the Disneyland Resort are now completely booked the night before the grand opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on May 31st. This includes Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Paradise Pier and Disney’s Grand Californian.

May 24, 2019: Grand Re-Opening of Sleeping Beauty Castle

The $300,000 refurbishment of Sleeping Beauty Castle is complete and the Castle’s walk-through re-opened today.

Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle now features vibrant new colors, a new roof, and other pixie dust enhancements.

May 24, 2019: Sleeping Beauty Castle’s new paint job.

“What’s interesting is that we used an ages-old painting technique called ‘atmospheric perspective’ to visually heighten the castle,” said Kim Irvine, art director at Walt Disney Imagineering. “We warmed the pink hues on the lower towers and gradually added blue to lighten the colors toward the top.”

Golden accents and a pixie dust sprinkled roof.

The same technique was used for the new roof, now in gorgeous cobalt blue hues. Each of the 18 original turrets was digitally scanned to create the same roofline and sparkly pixie dust was sprinkled on the center roof.

“We focused the golden accents and pixie dust around the entrance to the castle, as though it has been magically enchanted,” said Irvine.

The walk-through has brand new LED lighting.

Colorful banners, pennants and landscaping were also included in the refurbishment and the Sleeping Beauty Castle walk-through received new paint and interior lighting.

Walt Disney so loved the iconic spire at Notre-Dame Cathedral that he added it to Sleeping Beauty Castle.
