Filling Out DCP DORMS Form for Housing

Tomorrow!!!

Tomorrow!!!

I finally got my email to fill out Dorms!

As you know, I have been using Facebook to find a good roommate match.  You can read about that here.

soon

This is a new updated process.  You usually receive this email 10 days before your arrival and it is where you link with your roommates and select your housing references.

When I did my first program, they were just rolling this out.  Before Fall 2013, you had to be in line with who you wanted to live with and it was first come, first serve for housing preferences.  So you literally had people lining up in the middle of the night!  I can’t imagine how frustrating it must have been trying to meet up with everyone you wanted to live with!  With my first program, you were able to link with 1-7 other people since the maximum is 8 in one unit.

Once I got my DORMS email, you have to read and confirm two different articles about housing rules.  Then it brings you to a page where you link with your roommates.  Your special ID number is in your email.  And – if you didn’t know, this will actually be your Cast Member ID number!

One person in your group needs all of your groups ID numbers to link everyone.  Once that happens, you’re good to go!  It was VERY surprising when I logged onto Dorms and saw they were only allowing people to link with two other people!  Everyone on the Facebook groups were freaking out – especially if they were hoping to get a larger apartment!

Screen Shot 2015-05-12 at 10.39.53 AM

You have two options: choosing to be “adventurous” and be randomly put in with people.  Or if you have a person you want to live with, you link with them here.

I, unfortunately, spent a lot of time connecting with people who I wanted to live with and had similar interests as me.  However, I tried to link with them and it wouldn’t let me because we were doing different programs!  I had no idea that summer program and Fall Advantage program people couldn’t live together!! 😦

I felt SO horrible for the girl I was going to live with – we both had to be “adventurous” with our roommates since we didn’t find anyone in the right programs to link to.  I know we will meet up and be friends, but I really wish it had worked out better!

Here is the updated DCP Rent Prices:

2017-rent

The page below is also new to me!  In Fall 2013, we were able to select just 3 options for complexes and 3 options for occupancy. Just because you put “1 bedroom, Commons” doesn’t mean you’d necessarily get both of those.  Elly and I put: 1, 2, 3 bedroom and Commons, Chatham, and Patterson in our preference order and ended up getting a 3 bedroom in Chatham.

This new DORMS has every available living situation and you had to pick and drag it in the order you most preferred!  I really liked how specific it was!  You also have the option of being “adventurous” in this choice too!Screen Shot 2015-05-12 at 10.36.47 AMI really, REALLY want to live in The Commons in a 1 bedroom again!  I loved the laundry availability and I really want to check out the new store there (The Grid).

These are my final preferences:

05/26/2015 UPDATE:

I literally got my #16 – last!!! – choice.  😦

Choice #16: 4 bedroom, 8 girl apartment at Chatham Square, $100/week.

Choice #16: 4 bedroom, 8 girl apartment at Chatham Square, $100/week.

On the Quest for Good DCP Roommates

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 8.19.50 PM

Almost as soon as I was accepted into the program, I started wondering (and worrying) about roommates. I am pretty easy to live with – I’m super clean, I’m generally quiet, and I’m friendly. My issue is that it is hard to find someone as considerate as me to live with!

I joined the Accepted Summer Alumni facebook group and also the May 26th Arrival Date facebook group to try to find someone who is similar to me and also wants the same location and room size!

The majority of the people you’ll find in the College Program are looking for the most roommates and the cheapest living option. Well…I’m the exact opposite. I lived in a 3 bedroom in Chatham with 5 other girls. And the struggle was real when it came to doing my laundry (down two flights and in another building) and just generally sharing the space with strangers! It’s hard! There was never any room in the refrigerator and definitely none in the freezer! And if you know me – I don’t like confrontation. So when I was put in with some extremely loud, opinionated girls from the East Coast, I knew it was going to be rough going for me.

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 8.09.54 PM

Because I will only be doing this program for 3 months, I want to have a pleasant living situation! I saw a lot of people posting roommate surveys on these facebook groups so I jumped in!

_______________________________________________________________________

So clearly I was looking for someone quiet, clean, and considerate! I probably said it enough to sound like really crazy. Haha

As I started searching for roommates, every time I saw a girl post “Looking for a nonjudgmental, fun roommate!!!” all I could think was “….hard pass.” I do not want to live with someone who is up all night, scream talking with someone or having a ton of parties all the time. I want them to be at home, cleaning!

I know, I’m crazy – but a girl can dream!

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 8.11.38 PM

I talked with several girls who I thought could be a match. Almost zero people want to live in the Commons and definitely no one wanted to live in a single bedroom!

I finally found one girl from the Summer program who was interested in the Commons. I talked to her a little bit and she seemed nice. She was waiting to see if her two friends were also accepted to figure out rooming.

I also found a girl in the Arrivals group that I was super interested in living with. She seems really nice, quiet, and clean! We talked a lot for the past two months and I was really looking forward to living with her!

But then…(to be continued)

With a little help from mom and dad, we got everything put away and the apartment cleaned and decorated the first week we were here.

They inspect the apartment every 4-6 weeks for violations (like candles, pets, etc.). There is a notice board of upcoming apartment building inspections out by the check-in point for the complex.

Our Bedroom at Chatham Square

Our Bedroom

Elly’s twin bed

We are in a 3 bedroom (6 girls) apartment at Chatham Square.  The ceilings are really high (9′) and the apartment is roomy.  We like it a lot!

We got our bedroom all decorated yesterday and the beds made up. The bedrooms are huge and each has it’s own private bath with tub/shower. The bathroom is big too, we got a small 3 drawer cabinet from Walmart yesterday to put our stuff in.   We love the walk-in closet in our bedroom, lots of room to store stuff.

The apartment’s A/C is fabulous.  We keep it set to 72 degrees and have a small fan in the bedroom for the night.

DCP Move -In Day!

PART_1377802006128

8am:  The check-in line.  So HOT!!!!!!

Check-in Line at 8am was out the door and down the parking lot in the hot August sun!

Check-in line at 8am was out the door and down the parking lot in the hot August sun! So humid!!

We have arrived at the DCP!!!

Welcome (2)

Welcome to the DCP Program!

Move-In Day!

Today we woke up at 6am to be ready to line up at 8am in front of Vista Way.

DCP apartment locations

DCP apartment locations

It was super easy to find Vista Way. It was just along Highway I-4 and we could see it from the street! We pulled in and Uncle Peter dropped us off to get in line while he was going back to the hotel.

We were told to not get there before 7am and check in was between 8-10am. When we got there at 8am, the line was already around the side of the building and down the other side!

We waited in that line for more than an hour. It was hot, 97 degrees with humidity and no shade! I can’t tell you how much everyone was just pouring sweat! I was so worried because I knew we’d have to take a picture when we got inside and I was worried about my makeup melting off!

From the look of it, Elly was the only one in line who had brought a water bottle! At one point, I tried fanning my face with my hand and I literally felt nothing! So hot and sticky!

We got to the front of the line and handed in our DORMS forms. Then, we waited indoors for our housing. Elly and I are rooming together in Chatham Square! We wanted a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment, but we got a 3 bedroom instead. 😦

Then, we waited in another line and got our roles. I am working in Animal Kingdom at Discovery Island! It is right by the Tree of Life. Yay! I’m so excited because DAK has the shortest hours and we can wear shorts! 🙂

Elly got the Pin Traders role at Downtown Disney. She’ll probably get long hours because Magic Kingdom and DTD always stay open really late in the summer, sometimes until 2am!

We finally finished up around 10:30am and Aunt Barbara and Uncle Peter met up with us and took us to our apartment.

Disney Intern Housing at Chatham Square

Our apartment is at Chatham Square, not Vista Way, because we are both over 21.

Chatnam Square is so nice! The buildings are really pretty, blue and white plantation style, newly painted. We will have 4 other roommates living with us.

Chatnam Square

Outside our DCP apartment.

We immediately had to check out a vacuum because everything just seemed really dirty! We moved all the furniture around to get all vacuumed. The vacuum actually broke because there was so much hair wrapped around the filter! Yuck!

Walking to Disney Casting with Caroline.

Caroline walking into Disney Casting.

We went to Casting next at 1pm. We took the bus from Vista Way to Casting and got there by 1:30pm. We were told it should take under an hour but we were there for over 3 hours.

At Disney Casting, finding Hidden Mickeys in the sparkles on the wall!

Elly at Disney Casting, finding Hidden Mickeys in the sparkles on the wall!

It was just lines and lines and lines! But, at least I found out when I get to start working. I have a great start! My first work day isn’t until the 11th and then my first costumed day is the 13th.  That’s great because it means I can spend the whole week with mom and dad in the Parks having fun!

Here’s the rest of my week:
Tuesday:  Move all our stuff in and get organized.  We are playing around with the idea about getting a day pass to hang in the parks for the afternoon.
Wednesday:  Mandatory dorm meeting at 1pm at the Commons. Afternoon free.
Thursday:  Traditions class! Have to be on the bus by 6:45am to get there at 8am. First paid day and we have to wear professional clothes. We will receive our work ID and our name badge. Yay! Then we can finally get into the parks for free!!! Spend the night in the parks with mom and dad!
Friday: Ellys birthday! Hopefully going to the parks, maybe Epcot!

Elly’s first work day is the 8th, then she has her birthday off, and then she works again on Friday. She’ll have a lot more hours than me this semester.

I’m just so happy that Elly and I got to room together! We are in the apartments we wanted and we got awesome roles! And it’s really great mom and dad are here this first week to hang out with us!  (They drove down Elly’s car from Colorado so we would have a car here during our program.)

I don’t know how we could have done it without the help and support of Aunt Barbara and Uncle Peter. Picking us up from the airport in Fort Myers a couple days ago, driving us all around, helping us shop for apartment stuff, driving us here to Orlando!

We are so thankful to be at Disney World today!!! 🙂

Here is what our apartment looks like:

About Us!

Disney College Program Housing

The four DCP housing complexes

The four DCP housing complexes

We’ve been looking at some facts about which apartment Elly and I should live in.  We really want to have the smallest number of people living with us since we both have had awful experiences with college roommates.

Here is what we are thinking:

CHATHAM SQUARE:

Chatham Square is right across from Mickey’s Retreat and is next to Patterson Court. There are two mail kiosks where students can pick up and drop off their mail. There are laundry machines in buildings 2, 7, 15, and 19 and the machines take debit or credit cards. You can also sign up for text message alerts for when your machine has finished the wash or dry cycle by going to laundryview.com/chathamsquare. There is a fitness center, pool, sand volleyball court, outdoor pool table, and a tennis court available to the students living in Chatham Square. There is a bus stop at Chatham Square, which every bus will stop at.

PATTERSON COURT

Patterson Court is located in the same area at Chatham Square. There is one mail kiosk located in Patterson Court where students can pick up and drop off their mail. There are four laundry facilities, which take debit or credit cards. Similar to Chatham’s laundry, you can sign up for text alerts by going to laundryview.com/pattersoncourt in order to know when your wash or dry cycle is done. Patterson Court has a fitness center, pool, and an outdoor pool table. Patterson Court does not have its own bus stop, so the students living here walk to the bus stop at Chatham Square.

VISTA WAY

Vista Way is about a five-minute drive from the other college program housing. Vista Way is walking distance from a Walgreens, Chick-Fil-A, Wendy’s, Starbucks, and much more. There is one mail room where students can pick up their mail and they can send out mail in a mail kiosk outside of the fitness center. There are laundry machines in every building and they are card operated machines, which means you must purchase a laundry card for $5 with a $1 non-refundable fee. These cards are only used at Vista Way. Vista Way also has two pools, a fitness center, sand volleyball court, outdoor pool table, tennis court, basketball court, and two hot tubs. The transportation headquarters is also located at Vista Way. Vista Way is the oldest complex, however it is also known as the “party” housing (ironic since it has the most Wellness [dry] apartments!). There are always people around but if you don’t like the party scene it’s very easy to avoid as well.

More info: http://disneycollegeprogrammagic.blogspot.com/2012/10/college-program-housing.html

Patterson Court

Completed in 2008, Patterson Court is the newest and most luxurious of Disney College Program housing. Located in Little Lake Bryan near the Chatham Square dorm, this is the only complex without a bus stop. So unless you bring your own car, you will need to walk the 15 minutes to the bus stop at Chatham Square.  Patterson Court is the most expensive of all the College Program facilities, so if you are looking for more upscale accommodations than a regular college dorm room, this maybe the place for you

Chatham Square

Chatham Square is the mid-range of the College Program accommodations. If you do not have a car, this is apparently the best place to live, because the bus stops directly outside the security gates.

Don’t feel like going to the parks on your day off?  Chatham Square is right across the street from Mickey’s Retreat, a recreation complex used only by Disney Cast Members. On your day off, you can enjoy activities like tennis courts, tether ball, sand volleyball courts, soccer nets, pools, boat rentals, BBQ grills, hammocks, and table tennis.  Or you could just relax in a hammock or do some fishing.  All those activities vs. Space Mountain – it would be a toss-up as to which one to choose.

Vista Way

The Disney College Program Guide, points out that Vista Way housing was built during the early 1980′s, about the same time as Epcot. So while it is the oldest of the housing, it is also the least expensive.

The apartments are too small to have bunk beds.

Internet rumor has it that some wild parties have taken place at this particular housing unit, but that probably varies with participants, and everything I read indicated that security is quick to break up loud parties and maintain order on all the properties.

http://mouzekateerz.com/2012/03/07/the-disney-college-program-all-you-need-to-know-about-dorms-roommates-and-housing-costs/

Pros of Vista Way: Parties!  There’s a Walgreen’s literally across the road, along with Starbucks, Wendy’s and Chick-a-fil. The bus hub is right there!

Cons of Vista Way: Parties (there’s parties in every complex)! Oldest. None of the apartments have balconies or porches. 3 bedroom apartments only have 2 bathrooms.

Pros of Chatham Square: New-ish. Right across from Mickey’s Retreat. A 5 minute walk from the Commons. Good bathrooms.

Cons of Chatham Square: The closest grocery store is a 15-minute walk away, where there is also a Walgreens. Crappy gym. The walk-in closets are attached to the bathrooms, mostly.

Pros of Patterson Court: Newest. Lovely pool. Good gym. Pretty kitchen.

Cons of Patterson Court: The closest grocery store is a 20-minute walk away, where there is also a Walgreens. You have to walk to Chatham’s bus stop, which is about a 5 minute walk.

http://disneyeffervescent.blogspot.com/2012/02/housing-prices.html

My thoughts:

If there is a single bedroom option, that would be Elly and my first choice for sure.

I am thinking I would like to live in Chatham.  It looks really nice and has a lot of the things I am looking for.  Plus Elly and I don’t mind paying $10 more to get a nicer place.  Even though it would be cool to make friends easy with roommates, I think we should stick with the plan on trying to get a single room just so that we can have alone time when we need it.

UPDATE:

August 2013:  Us in front of our apartment at Chatham!  We got assigned to a 3 bedroom unit (6 roommates).

Image

We like the look of Chatham and the apartments are really big with large living room & dining area, big bedrooms.
