2017 Dia de los Muertos – Celebrating the Day of the Dead at Disneyland and California Adventure Park

IMG_4424

The traditional skeleton display for the Day of the Dead celebration.  Very festive.

From September 15 through November 2, 2017 Frontierland in Disneyland will feature a musical trio of iconic skeleton figurines called calacas, brightly colored flowers, and other decorative items celebrating the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

IMG_4426

Día de los Muertos explained: It’s a time of joy, not sadness, to remember family and friends who have passed.

Traditionally, the Day of the Dead – known as “All Souls Day” – falls on November 1st, the day after Halloween (All Hallows Eve).

Festive offering table.

Very cheerful during the day, lots of colorful flowers and sugary treats.

La Catrina, the symbol of the Day: It’s all very cheerful during the day, lots of colorful flowers and sugary treats.

There are special sweet treats out for the celebration, along with a trick-or-treating candy station open nearby during the Halloween Party nights.

We got to see last year.  We saw it during the day (above) and then we returned at night to see it after dark:

Now through November 2, Zocalo Park will feature a musical trio of iconic calacas—skeleton figurines—as well as brightly colored flowers and other decorative items commemorating the occasion.

Stop by and savor the tasty Orange Pumpkin Flan and other traditional Mexican treats exclusively at Rancho del Zocalo Restaurant while enjoying the authentic décor!

This fall and winter, guests at Disney California Adventure Park will have the opportunity to celebrate the everlasting bonds of family and the spirit of the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.

Starting with a new seasonal experience from Sept. 15 through Nov. 2, 2017 this immersive celebration will include special entertainment, featuring musicians and dancers, interactive activities — including a representation of Mexican folk art — and special décor and food inspired by this Mexican celebration of family.

The celebration will feature the upcoming Disney•Pixar animated motion picture, “Coco,” with special themed experiences inspired by the film. Select elements of the celebration will move to “a bug’s land” beginning Sunday, Nov. 5, where they will be presented alongside a special sneak peek of the film, which will continue through the holiday season until Jan. 7, 2018.

Trump Refuses to be in Disney’s Hall of Presidents after Iger Resigns

BREAKING NEWS!
Disney CEO has resigned from Trump’s business council.

Trump has yet to record the audio and still hasn’t donated a suit for his animatronic  to wear!  Don’t hold your breath on this one!

Disney CEO Bob Iger quits Trump advisory team as ‘matter of principle’

June 1, 2017: Disney (DIS) CEO Bob Iger said he will step down from Trump’s business advisory council, protesting the president’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate deal.

“Protecting our planet and driving economic growth are critical to our future, and they aren’t mutually exclusive,” Iger said in a statement. “I deeply disagree with the decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.”

He also posted his decision on Twitter, saying he’d resigned from Trump’s business council “as a matter of principle.”  Iger served on Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum, a group of business leaders who offer the president advice.

Current signage outside the Hall of Presidents.

The Hall of Presidents show at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World closed in January 2017 and is still not scheduled to reopen yet. (Normally, it would reopen the last week in June right before the 4th of July holiday, about 7 months after the election.)

Many people have wondered what role the new, very unpopular president would play in the Magic Kingdom attraction since he was elected.

On June 23, 2017, Disney announced it plans for Trump to speak.

“The same thing that we’ve done with other presidents, is the same plan we have for President Trump,” said Jacquee Wahler, vice president of communications. When asked if Trump would have a speaking role, Wahler said that he would.

6/27/2017:  Update from Disney Parks Blog:

Since the Magic Kingdom Park opened in 1971, The Hall of Presidents has brought together a one-of-a-kind look at the office of the President of the United States through film and the magic of Disney’s Audio-Animatronics technology. Despite some media reports to the contrary, President Trump will have a speaking role in The Hall of Presidents, like every president since 1993. We have been working closely with the current White House — just as we have with previous administrations — and the president’s recording session has been scheduled. The attraction will re-open in late 2017.

Whenever we refurbish one of our attractions, we take the opportunity to consider a broad range of enhancements. In this case, The Hall of Presidents is getting a new show, and a complete theater upgrade including a new sound system, lighting and high-definition projection system. The multi-screen viewing experience you may have seen in prior versions of the attraction is returning with an even wider vantage point of our country’s history.

***

Since Bill Clinton, every sitting president has recited a speech during the attraction.  However, since Trump is functionally illiterate and reads at a 4th grade level, it has proven difficult for Disney to get an audio from him.  They may end up using some pieced audio from a previous TV appearances.

Initially, the Walt Disney World website said the attraction would be closed between January 17th and June 29, 2017. No specific reopening date has been announced, but Disney Parks Blog says The Hall of Presidents will now reopen in “late 2017.”

The delay is because Trump has been “unavailable” to tape a 2 minute speech and he has yet to donate one of his personal Trump suits with an oversized red tie for the animatronic to wear.  They may end up having to buy a suit from Trump’s business in NYC for it to wear. (Hard to believe that a “billionaire” can’t afford to donate one of his suits to Disney!)

Rumor has it that Trump also didn’t approve of the animatronic sketches and wanted the avatar to look “thinner”.

This is What Happened to the Animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom During Hurricane Irma

animal-kingdom-irma-1-2

DAK re-opened Tuesday morning. Some rides like Kali Rapids, the train,  and the safari were still closed.

Many guests were wondering this past weekend what Disney does with the inhabitants of Disney’s Animal Kingdom with Hurricane Irma looming in the forecast and Disney park closure announcements starting on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 9, 2017).

Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s is home to some 1,700 animals representing 250 different species throughout the 500-acre park. That’s a lot of wildlife to keep track of!

Welcome to my park!

Welcome to DAK!

Disney doesn’t evacuate their animals off property.  They have safe locations for them behind the scene, aka “backstage”, at the Animal Kingdom Park. All of the wildlife pens and barns were built of reinforced concrete and designed to be able to withstand a Category 3 Hurricane.

As a Disney Cast Member, Caroline took an exclusive DAK backstage tour.  She learned how the animals get called back to their pens in the evening with special whistles and signals.  The animals actually can’t wait to return to their overnight pens because they know that food and water, along with fresh bedding, is waiting for them!  The whole process takes 3 hours to complete.

Last weekend, Disney had all their cast member zookeepers, trainers, and veterinary staff on hand during the hurricane. These experts monitored the behavior of the animals and continually checked on them both before, during, and after the storm.

closed3

Sunday:  DAK is closed due to Hurricane Irma!

With the announced park closure on Saturday afternoon, the Hurricane Rideout Teams  were activated across the WDW property.  These crews are made up of volunteer cast members who agree to stay in their park or resort for at least 72 hours during the storm.  [Caroline’s CM friend was stationed at The Living Seas aquarium in Epcot all weekend during the hurricane.]

100_7002

The alligators were OK in their enclosures.

Some water-dwelling creatures such as the alligators and turtles were left in their outdoor man-made habitats since this is where they were the safest.  All birds were brought inside.  (The native Florida birds that live at DAK were left outside.)

Disney takes every precaution with their animals, ensuring that they all were kept safe.  Not one animal was harmed during Hurricane Irma with winds that topped 80mph in Orlando!  All animals were safe and sound on Tuesday morning when the park re-opened.

If you’re interested in seeing the animal pens and how well Disney treats all their animals, you can take a backstage tour at DAK called Backstage Tales!

Two Disney Sisters

Two Girls and a Mouse Tale

by Elly Collins & Caroline Collins

Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney.

Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.
