Reconnecting With DCP Friends: Sebastian From Germany!

100_6605

My ICP friend, Sebastian.  Such a nice guy!

One of my most favorite things from the DCP program were the friendships that I made! You can read about them here.  It made me SO happy that some of them were still working at Disney when I visited in November.

I first met Sebastian during my extension of my program, while I was playing at Epcot. One of my bucket list items was to eat around the world and it was always a plus to make friends while I did it! 🙂

I have always been super lucky running into Sebastian every time I went to Epcot (maybe that just meant he worked all the time!), so I wasn’t worried about finding him again in November.

Epcot Germany

After walking all the way through Epcot Germany, I finally had to ask one of the CMs to find him for me.  Turns out Sebastian had been promoted to work in the “candy shop”, aka the Karamel-Kuche, which happens to be my favorite place in Epcot!  (OK, it’s tied with Norway as my favorite…).  I LOVE the caramel popcorn from Germany!

Sebastian came out from the kitchen to see me, after having worked a long day making all that caramel popcorn.   Check out those neon orange gloves he has to wear.  They are for heat protection.  And I just love the baker’s hat worn at such a jaunty angle! haha!

And the best part?  He still remembered me too!

Me &  Sebastian

It was so fun catching up with Sebastian!  We probably would have been great friends if our programs had overlapped a little bit more.  After almost a year living and working in Florida, I was so surprised to notice that he has almost completely lost his German accent and now sounds exactly like a Floridian!

I told him about how much I love the caramel popcorn there and was asking about what he does all day, and then he completely surprised me by performing a Magical Moment and giving me some popcorn that he just made for me to take home!!!  🙂

My Magical Moment:  YUM!!!

I’m so glad I got to run into him again; he is such a nice guy!  I decided after my trip was over that I wanted to start giving formal compliments to the great CMs that made our trip so special.  This is the email that I sent to Disney about Sebastian and what a wonderful CM he is.

Sebastian was recognized by his managers for being a great CM!

He’ll be leaving to return home in March 2015.

But, what a great way to end my visit to Epcot!

Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney. Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.

Epcot’s Germany

German Village

Before the DCP program, I almost never explored Germany in the World Showcase.  I’m not really into beer so I had no reason to go.  But, boy was I wrong, because look how pretty it is!

The first time I really looked at Germany was when I went there for my friend, Meaghan’s, birthday.  She made reservations at the Biergarten Restaurant.  The restaurant is in the far back, to the left.  If you go to the right, there is a quick service place that serves bratwurst and sauerkraut.

The Biergarten Restaurant

You walk inside and it is actually a huge room with layered seating.  It literally feels like you are inside a German village.  So pretty! 🙂

Inside the Biergarten Restaurant

It is set up as a huge buffet with all the traditional German food.  The best was the cheesy potato casserole.  So good!

My friend, Meaghan, and her German food. Yum!

Then, while you eat, these guys come out in traditional clothing and play for you.  There is a small stage area in front of them so the kids can come up and dance along to the music.  I loved it!

You would not believe how cool they sounded.  Really fun music.

These are alphorns, consisting of a wooden natural horn having a wooden cup-shaped mouthpiece. Traditionally, they were used by mountain dwellers in Germany and Switzerland.

Another good thing about Epcot’s Germany is that it is the only location that sells beer and pretzels.  Sadly, the food line is always super long for this.  But, the beer is worth the wait.

Doesn’t this German pretzel look tasty?

The joke is on you if you buy this pretzel!!  The German pretzels are actually pretty gross and dry – not like the tasty Mickey shaped pretzels you can get at the Magic Kingdom!  I asked a friend who works at Germany and he said that he doesn’t understand why they taste so bad because they taste so much better in the real Germany!  Maybe they are like that to compliment the German beers.

On the left side of the shops, there is a yummy caramel shop called Karamell Küche, an ornament room, and a room filled with Swarovski crystal items!  Very pretty!

Elly is obsessed with the hand blown glass bird ornaments!

I love this shirt! It always makes me laugh. There is also one with Grumpy.

On the right side of the shops is the German toy section and sports.  I guess soccer is really big over there?

German Mickey Ears.

And last, but not least, you get to meet all the cast members who are actually from Germany.

This is my friend, Sebastian, whom I met while trying to make friends around the world.  How cute is he?!  He is so fun to talk with.

Epcot’s Hidden Gem – Germany’s Karamell-Kuche

Germany

The Karamell-Kuche treat shop

Epcot Germany’s dessert shop – Karamell-Kuche – is by far one of the most delicious places in Epcot!  When we visit the World Showcase, we never really stop in Germany so I had no idea of this place until my CP friend, Becca, told me about the delicious caramel popcorn that they sell there.

I am a huge fan of caramel popcorn!  My dad likes to make it at home, but despite all his efforts, this popcorn is probably a million times better!!

Karamell-Kuche is sponsored by Werther’s so this is what you’ll see when you walk in:

My Magical Moment:  YUM!!!

My favorite thing to look at while waiting in line are the cute German cast members!  Too bad they’re not pictured!

You can see the bags of caramel popcorn in the top middle section of the photo.  You can get a large or small bag and it’s only around $6!

Dad would go crazy over how good these caramel apples look!

Here is a picture of me eating the strawberry dipped in dark chocolate and drizzled with caramel.  People stopped me in the World Showcase to ask where I got it!

1969213_10203474409685877_545410627_nFor some reason, Elly and I are never really hungry by the time we reach Germany (which is why we never stop there in the first place)!  But since we discovered this delicious “hidden gem” we always stop and get the big bag of caramel popcorn and bring it home for a snack later.  We like to put it in baggies and store it in the fridge until we’re ready for a snack.

Yum!
