Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney. Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.

Disney statement about the Dancing Lights:

This holiday season will mark the finale for The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. The display of lights has enjoyed a successful run at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, going all the way back to when it first appeared on Residential Street.

In order to prepare for some incredible experiences coming to the park, including the recently announced Toy Story Land and a Star Wars-themed land, we will not be able to present The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights in the future. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the family of Jennings Osborne for letting us share their family tradition year after year.

And thank you to all of you for being part of the spectacle with us. Here’s to making more memories in this, the 20th and final year.

A Spectacle of Dancing Lights.

The Big Light Switch will be turned off for the last time on January 3, 2016!

Where: Disney’s Hollywood Studios

When:  November 06, 2015 – January 03, 2016

The light spectacle this year has been enhanced to include choreographed “dancing” lights that swirl and soar to an exhilarating medley of holiday music every 15 minutes, thanks to electronic wizardry featuring more than 400 dimmers.

Every building façade, all the trees, wreaths, bells and holiday figures dance to classic tunes while “Florida snow” flurries fall from the skies.  It really is something to see!!

Marvel at millions of glittering lights perfectly synchronized to holiday music. Share in an awe-inspiring seasonal treat for the entire family. Brilliant multi-colored bulbs wrap the buildings, changing hues and brightness throughout the show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

As joyful music surrounds you, a sea of twinkling lights form twirling carousels of heavenly angels, toy soldiers, a spinning Earth, and even Santa and his trusty reindeer. It’s something you have to see to believe!

The LED lights were so BRIGHT!

This elaborate holiday decoration display incorporates millions of LED Christmas lights, fake snow and various holiday vignettes done to familiar holiday carols and tunes.  Lovely.

Signs You Have PDCPD–Post Disney College Program Depression

castle graduation

(from Tumblr)

The day you returned home from the DCP program, you were excited to see family and friends, and finally get back to your “normal life.” The very next day:  Bored!

You have a bad case of PDCPD, my friend!

  • As you’re unpacking your immense mass of Disney merchandise that you’ve collected over the past 5-9 months, you have a minor meltdown trying to figure out where to put it all… And you hope your family/friends don’t think you’re crazy for acquiring all this stuff during a time when you told them that you were “going broke.”
  • Every time you watch a Disney movie, you tear up before the movie even starts…seeing that Disney Castle with fireworks over it….Your heart breaks a little every time you see a Disney Parks commercial. Missed the opening of the new Mine Train in May?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOJQZxDX7uo
  • You see Disney merchandise at Walmart and start calculating how much it would cost with your discount. Then, you realize your discount won’t work there… Oh, and you don’t work for Disney anymore either…
  • The thought of not seeing fireworks every night puts you in a depressed state of mind.
  • You get easily offended when somebody says something remotely negative about Disney.
  • Your brain is full of wonderful Disney trivia and tidbits that you never knew before working for Disney.
  • You see Hidden Mickeys everywhere.  🙂
  • You start working back home and are shocked at the lack of safety in your work place. Remember, “Safe-D begins with me”!
  • You think back to your Traditions class and wish to go back to that special day and feel those feelings all over again.
  • You order the free Disney vacation planning DVD because you miss getting mail from Disney.
  • When you hear about new things happening at your Park, you want to see it ASAP!
  • You’ve thought about doing another DCP program or a Professional Internship in the near future and don’t care what role you’d get because you want to go back. SO BADLY.
  • You took hundreds of photos during the DCP program and uploaded them already, but realize you have hundreds more that haven’t been posted. However, you delay posting them because looking back at all the memories reminds you that you’re not there anymore.
  • You’ve said “Have a magical day!” by accident and received weird looks from people. At Disney, you’d get a smile from guests.
  • Disney movie marathons on the ABC Family channel become a special “must see” event.

The Teddy Bear Lady of the Grand Floridian

Chatting with the 'Teddy Bear Lady'

Chatting with Lynn, aka the ‘Teddy Bear Lady’

We’ve stayed at the Grand Floridian many times.  It’s a lovely, grand hotel done in the style of a turn-of-the-century seaside luxury resort hotel.  We’ve also been to the Hotel Coronado in San Diego and seen the architecture that this hotel was based upon.

At the Floridian, every afternoon the sound of live piano music permeates through the acoustically-friendly lobby.  Sometimes there’s jazz quartets, sometimes it’s a single piano player tickling the ivories.

We noticed the Teddy Bear Lady on our past few visits and finally decided to talk with her.  She lives nearby in an assisted living home, but in the past stayed at the Grand Floridian with her husband (now dead) many, many times.

The home drives her over in the afternoon after lunch.  She brings her suitcase full of teddy bears with her every day and sits in the same chair in the lobby surrounded by her teddy bears and enjoying the afternoon’s musical entertainment while doing quite a bit of people watching.  (Think of all the international guests and families that she sees every day!)

She is such a sweet old lady (she’s 72); we’re glad that we stopped for a chat with her finally.

If you see her sitting at the Grand Floridian some afternoon, feel free to stop by and say hello to Lynn.  You’ll be glad you did! 🙂

Enjoying the lobby music.

Lynn enjoying the lobby music in her usual seat.

Two Girls and a Mouse Tale

by Elly Collins & Caroline Collins

Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program (Fall 2013/Spring 2014) and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.
