Two Girls and a Mouse Tale

by Elly Collins & Caroline Collins

Ever wonder what it’s like to work for Disney???

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program (Fall 2013/Spring 2014) and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney. Available now at Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle formats. Published by Theme Park Press.

Four Parks in One Day

Animal Kingdom

So, the one and only time I ever tried to actually do “Four Parks in One Day”, it went really well!   NOT!

Our DCP program was coming to an end and we wanted to try to do all the Parks in one day.  My work friends, Amanda and Sara, and I got up SO early (9am).  The plan was to do the Disney Parks in this order: Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and then end the day at the Magic Kingdom.

Unfortunately, that was literally the one day in over two weeks that it completely poured rain all day.

Amanda, me, and Sara at Animal Kingdom, right before it started pouring rain!

We got to Animal Kingdom and luckily we all remembered to bring our umbrellas.  We checked the wait times and the Safari was listed at 30 minutes, Dinosaur was 15 minutes, and Everest was 10 minutes.  We decided to go to the Safari because we knew the line would just be getting longer throughout the day.  Turned out to be a really bad decision on our part.

We got there and the line was now 50 minutes, and we decided to wait.  Turns out, the times just hadn’t been updated yet because we actually waited 120 minutes!  In the rain. 😦

But it was worth it because all the animals were out and walking around!

DSCN0973

Cool elephant!  Doesn’t mind the rain at all.

The rhinos were literally two feet from the truck!

DSCN0975

Have you ever seen the lions out like this?!  The other lioness was on that really high rock in the background.

DSCN0982

The zebras are rarely out walking around during the day, so this was so cool to actually see them!  They are actually black with white stripes.  You can tell that because their noses are black.  Also they establish cliques and will beat each other up if they don’t like them.  (I learned all this on my behind-the-scenes DAK tour in February.)

Me in front of my favorite place. 🙂

By the time we got done with the safari, it was raining soooo hard!  Everest was closed and so was Dinosaur.  We decided to try and wait out the rain by going to eat at Yak and Yeti.

I ordered the Orange Chicken and Jasmine Rice.  It was SO good!  Except I don’t know if it is really worth the price.  This plate?  It cost $19.95.

Orange Chicken for lunch.

I read a blog about how you HAVE to try the pineapple and cream cheese wontons.  This was so worth it!!!

Seared pineapple and crispy cream cheese wontons, drizzled in white chocolate sauce and it is served with a side of vanilla ice cream.  Yum!!!!

Once we were done eating, we realized that it was still raining really hard and not likely to let up all day.

We decided to stop in and see safari Mickey and Minnie.

DSCN0995

I still love their safari outfits!!

We talked about fighting through the rain and going on to the next Disney Park, but we were already thoroughly soaked and tired.

Instead we all went back to our apartments and took naps.  Although we did not end up doing all our amazing plans, it was still a good day hanging out with friends at DAK!!  🙂

Celebrating the 2014 Winter Olympics

Celebrating the Olympics

Meeting Italian Mickey and Chip & Dale from China.

This month’s housing event was a celebration of the upcoming Olympic Games, which open in Sochi, Russia on Friday. There were Disney characters present from around the world.

I’ve been trying to see how many photos of Mickey in different costumes I can get. He has over 290 different costumes that he can show up in for pretty much any event or theme you can think of. (Minnie has over 200 costumes in her wardrobe.) This is the first time that I’ve seen Italian Mickey and New York Minnie.

Goofy is from France, Donald from Mexico, Minnie from USA.

I worked last night on the final shift for the Team Mickey store.

At closing time – 11pm – the Cast Members all lined up with pom-poms and wished the final guests farewell with a Magical Moment good-bye.

Team Mickey, an athletic-gear and souvenir store at Downtown Disney, is closing in January 2014 in favor of Marketplace Co-Op, a store-within-a-store concept that’s set to open in late spring 2014, the company said Friday.

Once open, the Co-Op will feature six slots for shops featuring beauty and fashion accessories for women and girls, home products with a dash of Disney theming, vintage-inspired sports apparel plus D-Tech on Demand, a spot with personalized and customized electronic accessories.

Last Day of Class

Screen Shot 2014-08-18 at 11.30.25 AM

We had our last day of class, and finished with group presentations. Only one guy in our group was taking it for university credit; we other three were just auditing the class. But, we would have gotten an “A” in the class! Probably the best part of taking the class was that Caroline and I always had Thursdays off together!

Exciting Events Coming Soon!!

We are so excited!!!

The service celebration is where College Program students officially graduate from the program!  Mickey is there to give us a diploma and a graduation Mickey Cap!  Luckily, Elly and I have that day off, so we are definitely going!

The Winter Formal is tonight!  8pm-midnight!  I’m so excited because I got today off!  Elly was originally scheduled to work 1pm-midnight (yuck!), but she was allowed to split her shift and end at 6pm instead!

We are really looking forward to the buffet, dancing, and character meet and greet!  🙂

Going to be a great night!
