Disney is Banning Plastic Straws Worldwide

Disney is banning single use plastic straws worldwide.

In an effort to keep moving forward with their environmental protection efforts, The Walt Disney Company announced Thursday it is going to eliminate all single-use plastic straws and plastic stirrers at its locations across the world by mid-2019, a reduction of more than 175 million straws and 13 million plastic stirrers each year.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom banned plastic straws and cup lids from the time it opened in 1998.  Since the Creature Comfort Starbucks store at DAK opened in 2015, the drink straws offered to guests are made of rolled paper.

Disney is also transitioning from individual in-room amenities to refillable in-room amenities in its resort hotels and Disney Cruise Line ships. The refillable shampoo and conditioner bottles will reduce 80 percent of plastic from guest rooms.

Along with these moves, Disney is reducing the amount of plastic shopping bags in its stores. Reusable shopping bags are being offered for a small fee.

Disney’s Environmental Conservation Goals.

“Eliminating plastic straws and other plastic items are meaningful steps in our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products. “These new global efforts help reduce our environmental footprint, and advance our long-term sustainability goals.”

Starbucks + Disney = Perfect Day!

Walt Disney World is joining Starbucks, American Airlines, Marriott, the cities of Seattle and San Francisco, and other cities by announcing a ban on plastic straws.

Starbucks will do away with plastic straws by 2020, a plan aimed at eliminating more than one billion straws a year.

McDonald’s launched a new set of goals earlier this year: by 2025 all restaurants packaging, including straws, will be from renewable, recycled, or certified sustainable sources.

We love visiting the Creature Comfort Starbucks and don’t mind the paper straws at all.  ❤

We support this effort 100%!

We worked at WDW for a year in the Disney College Program and have written a book about what it’s like to be a cast member working for Disney.

We’ve included advice on how to successfully get into the DCP program, including some of the actual phone interview questions, how to have a successful internship, and how not self-term before your program ends. Our book is filled with lots of behind-the-scene stories of the magic of Disney.

Meeting Tarzan at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.48.02 PM

Spending my day off back at the Animal Kingdom.

I was so excited to hear that Tarzan was finally getting a permanent Meet & Greet area in Animal Kingdom.

First of all, he is seriously hot!  Second, I’ve seen him around and he is always so funny with guests!

I finally got a day off and I knew I had to meet him.  His current location is Pocahontas’s old meet and greet location, behind the Tree of Life on the Discovery Island Trails.  There is never any line because people don’t know about it.

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.49.41 PM

Notice how he holds the pen!

As I was asking for his autograph, Tarzan was telling me “Jane teach Tarzan autograph. Now Tarzan has best autograph in whole jungle.”  So funny!

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.49.17 PM

Sniff, sniff….

I went to pose to take a photo with him and then…

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.48.59 PM

A little too close Tarzan!

He totally smells my hair!!!

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.48.47 PM

He is a hunk of burnin’ love for sure!   ❤

Ahhhh….I laughed so hard!

He said I looked like I’d been living in the jungle for a while – I think he must have recognized me from around DAK! Haha!

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.49.29 PM

Making jungle noises.  (I’m wearing my DAK Mickey Ears!)

I wasn’t sure if I should put my arm around him or not!  I mean, he’s only wearing a loin cloth and a spear!

It was so fun seeing him up close and in real life! ❤

My Day with My Family

Screen Shot 2015-06-20 at 10.32.24 AM

No FastPasses needed here, we walked on!  “We’re not gonna make it! We’re not gonna make it!”

My dad and brother, Christian, have been sailing around the Florida Keys for the past week with Boy Scouts. They decided to change their flight back so they could spend a day with me! Literally 1 day.  So, we went Disney Crazy!

Our first stop?  Visiting my favorite place: Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

Starting our wild, pedal-to-the-metal day:

Screen Shot 2015-06-20 at 10.32.13 AM

Expedition Everest.  Perfect day here in Florida!

unnamed-17

I’m just here for a relaxing train ride through the Himalayas…but I heard the Yeti’s been messing with the tracks. I think I’ll go investigate!

After we walked on to Dinosaur, we tried our luck at Expedition Everest.  Walked on!

unnamed-16

Soaking wet, but it felt good…the day was heating up!  Record 100 degrees!

After Everest, we tried our luck with Kali River Rapids:  “Where you WILL get wet and you MAY get soaked”! Guess which one we got….

unnamed-19

The Tree of Life, park symbol of the Animal Kingdom.

As you walk between Africa and Asia, there is the most beautiful view of the Tree of Life! ❤

unnamed-20We were on a time crunch, so we skipped the Safari and headed to the new Zuri’s Sweets Shop – it just opened yesterday!!

IMG_0707

Stopping for a snack at Zuri’s Sweets Shop.

You can read more about it here.

Just opened at 10am this morning!

Our last stop at Animal Kingdom before park hopping over to Epcot was to visit the new Creature Comforts Starbucks!!!

unnamed-7

Guests were limited to buying 5 mugs. They were flying off the shelves!

My #1 goal today was to buy one of the new ‘You are Here’ Starbucks mugs from DAK! Yes!!!!

To read more about the new Starbucks at Animal Kingdom on opening day, click here.

After only 3 hours, we headed to our next stop: EPCOT!

unnamed-13

Spaceship Earth at Epcot

By now, it was after 12pm, so we stopped by the UK pavilion to get Christian some Fish and Chips, and then headed to France to get some lunch for Dad and me.

unnamed-1

All so good!!

Dad and I split a quiche Lorraine and a Jambon Beurre.  Christian said his fish and chips were the best he has ever had!

We got fast passes for Living with the Land, Finding Nemo, and Spaceship Earth.

We also made time to go on the fun ride at Mexico! It’s my new favorite ride at World Showcase since they closed Maelstrom!

unnamed

Last ride of the day!  Boarding Spaceship Earth.

In total, Dad and Christian were with me for only 18 hours before they had to get on a plane back to Colorado!  It was SO sad saying goodbye to them!!

I wish they could have stayed longer, but I have more company coming for a visit this weekend!

I got to visit the new Starbucks, located in Creature Comforts!!!

unnamed-6

It was so cool seeing how they redecorated my old location!  It is set up with two lines, both offering the same things.  First you go to a Cast Member for sandwiches and desserts.

Then you go to the register CM to order your drinks.unnamed-5

I’m obsessed with the new cupcakes at Creature Comforts!!

Here are the adorable cups!  WITH lid!  The official drink policy at DAK is no lids or straws, but they are bending this rule for the new Starbucks.  The straws are green and made out of double thick paper.

I am DEFINITELY going to be visiting this place a lot while I’m here!  I love it!

Just opened yesterday!

I stopped by the new Zuri’s Sweets Shop to check it out.  They held a grand opening for the new store yesterday.

It’s located in Africa, just to the right of the Safari ride.

Rows and rows of sweets.

This place is AWESOME!  All the merchandise is animal-themed or Lion King themed.

All the popcorn treats have cool African flavors.

New Starbucks at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Open!

Starbucks Creature Comforts at DAK

Starbucks Creature Comforts at DAK

I went to the new Starbucks Creature Comforts at DAK not once, but twice, this week!

The invitation to Pre-Opening Event for cast members

The invitation to the Pre-Opening Events for cast members  “thanks a latte”

First, cast members got an exclusive invite to preview the new store earlier this week.  I went on Wednesday; it was my day off and you couldn’t be there in costume.

I was told that as part of their Starbucks training, every cast member has to know how to make every drink on the menu and they must make them 10x perfectly to be a barista.

My drink was PERFECT!  Delicious and icy cold! 🙂

And, what about the straws??!!  As you know, the Animal Kingdom has a “no plastic straws policy” to keep the animals’ habitats plastic-free.

But, you can’t drink a Starbucks without a straw!

My free drink with it's green paper straw.

My free pre-opening drink with it’s green paper straw.

At DAK, the straws are made out of paper and colored Starbucks’ trademark green.

Like at the other merchandise locations in Animal Kingdom, cashiers ask if you’d like to donate to the Disney Conservation Fund when you pay and you get a special button for donating any amount.

Also, for every Flat White drink sold here, Disney is making a donation to cotton top tamarin conservation.  Nice!

Downside:  There’s is no seating in the place and the main floor space is just for queue lines.  We think that there should be small tables to relax and enjoy your drink and snack!

Having a Starbucks Drink at Disney World

When facing a 12+ hour day at the parks, who couldn’t use a Starbucks coffee to start the day out right??

There are 6 Starbucks locations on WDW property:

This Starbucks is HUGE and the line moves very fast!

This DTD Starbucks is HUGE and the line moves very fast!

Downtown Disney West Side (9am – Midnight) Opening on May 30, 2014, this unusual store is one of just four company-owned Starbucks in Disney properties around the world.  Besides being the largest Starbucks we’ve ever been in, it also has an interactive display that shows a “chalk” outline of customers that walk in front. Even cooler, the display connects to a sister store at the Downtown Disney property in Anaheim, CA.

The Downtown Disney West Side Starbucks now serves beer and wine (part of the “Starbucks Evenings” program) – a first for any Starbucks in the state. They also have a cool grass art work piece (see photo above) and a fire for cold nights. Great place to sit back and relax from all the disney craziness.
