The Wonderful Smells of Disney World

****

Welcome to Walt Disney World!

Welcome to the sweet smelling Walt Disney World!

If you’re a frequent guest of Disney World, you know what people mean when they talk about that “Disney Smell”.

Orlando, Florida!

Welcome to Orlando, Florida!

1. The Smell of Florida
It actually starts when you arrive at Orlando airport and walk outside for the first time.  Florida smells like Florida…it has a sweetly fragrant scent due to all the blooming flowers and trees.  Many returning tourists pause for a moment when they walk outside the terminal and just take a deep breath of sweet Florida air.  Ahhh, breathe it in…

Southwest MCO

We ❤ Southwest!

Even more special, there is just something about the way the all the parks, attractions and Disney resorts smell…all so good! Long ago, Disney realized that if the parks smelled good and unique, you’d remember it long after your vacation was over. And, more importantly, you’ll remember how good you felt at the time.

Did you know that Disney World pumps irresistible scents onto its parks and resort lobbies to entice park goers? There are strategically placed devices called “smellitizers” dispersed throughout Disney World resort.  They emit pleasing scents throughout the day and night.

smell

Best Disney Smells!

Ask any cast member to name where a particular scent is associated with and we can all pass this test with flying colors!

2. The Smell of the Water Rides

pirates

Guests say that you could line up bottles of water with scents from the fog from Pirates of the Caribbean and the other indoor water rides (It’s a Small World, Splash Mountain, Living with The Land at Epcot, the Three Caballeros ride) and they could correctly associate the water’s scent with the attraction.  And, they would be right.pirates

3. The Smell of the Disney World Resort Lobbies

The Grand Floridian

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

This is not a hard one at all.  In fact, the fragrances are so specific that you can actually buy candles and air fresheners online with the scent of each resort.

Disney air fresher scents

You can get air fresheners for your home and car that smell like Disney World resorts and attractions!

For example, the Polynesian Resort lobby smells vaguely “Hawaiian” with floral and wood notes.  The Yacht and Beach Club smells of the “seashore”, but not in a bad way, more like a fresh salty sea breeze.

disney candles

Yes please!

The Grand Floridian lobby smells of “rich money” to me, except when the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House is up in the lobby during the holidays.  Then, of course, it smells strongly of freshly-baked gingerbread.

gingerbread8

When the Gingerbread House goes up at the GF every November, the whole Grand Atrium smells like gingerbread cookies!

DCP holiday cookies

We love the smell of Holiday Cookies!

4. The Spa Scent of Disney Resort Soaps and Toiletries

soap (2)

Disney Resort toiletries smell wonderful!

If you’ve stayed at any of the properties onsite, you know this scent!

Disney shampoo

January 2020: We thought all the Disney hotels had switched over to bulk dispensers, but when we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel, they still provided individual portions.  Everything smelled so good!

I call this smell “rich spa”.  It’s so wonderful a scent that guests often pause while washing their hands and just smell the fragrant bubbles.

Disney shampoo

Guests love the Disney shampoo and conditioner so much that you can buy it online!

4. The Smell of Caramel Popcorn Cooking at Karamell Kuche in Epcot Germany

DSCN0588

Making a fresh batch of warm caramel popcorn.

My ICP friend from Germany worked in this sweet shop making the caramel popcorn with Werther’s Original Caramels all day.  In fact, he was kind enough to share the secret recipe with me. (Of course, the recipe makes a huge batch!)

On one of my last days at the DCP program, I stopped in to say good-bye to him and him made a Magical Moment for me by bagging up a small bag of caramel popcorn that he had just finished making.  It was delicious!  So warm and chewy!

Every time I smell the caramel on my Starbucks caramel latte, I always think of him and the sweet Karamell Kuche shop at Epcot.

5.  The Special Holiday Parade Scents

MNSSHP1b

The Halloween parade smells like Candy Corn candy, especially Goofy’s float!

If you’ve ever had the chance to go to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in the fall, you know that the ‘Boo To You’ parade smells just like candy corn when Goofy’s float passes by.

And love these guys too!

Dancing reindeer on Main Street USA with the delicious scent of baking sugar cookies filling the air during the holidays!

And, if you’ve been on Main Street USA during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party during the holidays, you’ve noticed the smell of sugar cookies baking and the scent of peppermint candy canes is also in the air!

6.  The Scent of Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.48.59 PM

Sniff, sniff….Tarzan likes the smell of my sunscreen!

The number one smell that Caroline associates with DAK is probably not the one you’re thinking of!  No, it’s not the smell of animals and animal manure!

Caroline:  After working at DAK through every season now, I would have to say that the smell I most associate with my workplace is: sunscreen!

sunscreen

Clouds and clouds of sunscreen everywhere!

Working at the front of DAK, it seems like every guest that gets off the trams coming in from the parking lots pauses and literally hoses down themselves and their children with sunscreen.  And, not just the lotion kind that comes in bottles.  Over the past few years, aerosol spray sunscreen has become very popular.  They spray clouds of it in the air like it’s free!

By 9am every day, a vaguely coconut smell from sunscreen fills the plaza in front of the entrance turnstiles.  It’s a smell I’ll always associate with DAK! 🙂

Screen Shot 2015-07-23 at 7.48.02 PM

Spending the day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  Yes, Caroline’s wearing some coconut scented SPF 50 sunscreen!

7. The Smell of Burning Wood

Ahhh...the smell of Rome burning...

Hmmm…the smell of Rome burning…

That would be the smoky smell of burning embers from the Rome burning diorama while riding Spaceship Earth.  Just before that scene, as you’re loading onto the ride, you smell the smoldering ashes from cave-dwelling prehistoric man discovering fire.

Spaceship Earth is closing in mid-2020 for a major refurbishment and won’t reopen until early 2022 ahead of the 40th anniversary celebration at Epcot.

8.  Fresh Scents on Soarin’ Around the World

soarin elephant

The elephant scene from Soarin’ Around the World

As you soar over elephants on the African Savanna, you’ll smell fresh grass as an elephant throws dirt into the air.  There’s lots of good scents on this ride.

Enjoy the lovely scent of flowers during this scene!

9.  Popcorn! Popcorn!! Popcorn!!!

You can buy the Millennium Falcon filled with popcorn OR filled with french fries!!!

We love the smell of popcorn and Disney makes a ton of it all day long at the Magic Kingdom.

Disneyland’s Two Cigar Store Indians

****

indian1

He’s very short! The Main Street Cigar Store Indian wears a blue cape.

When Disneyland first opened in 1955, there was a Tobacconist Shop on the east side of Main Street. It closed in 1990 and was replaced by the Music Company, but its Cigar Store Indian is still presiding over Main Street USA.

Most small towns in 1900 America had a tobacco shop so, to be authentic, turn-of-the-century Main Street USA had to have one as well.

Cigar Store Indians or Wooden Indians were used as advertising means to draw men into smoke shops. The idea derives from the fact that North American Indians first introduced tobacco to Europeans.  In fact, Christopher Columbus wrote about tobacco in his diary in 1492.

The Tobacconist Shop sold an international selection of cigarettes, pipes, pipe tobacco, cigars, and accessories. They also distributed complimentary match books to guests.

indian

The Frontierland Cigar Store Indian wears a reddish cape.

Disneyland has a second Cigar Store Indian over in Frontierland, where he draws attention to the Westward Ho Trading Company, a shop with an emphasis on Disney trading pins.

smoke

Effective May 1, 2019, the Disneyland Resort Parks (Disneyland and Disney California Adventure) became 100% smoke free. Also, the Esplanade (the area between the main gates to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure) as well as the Downtown Disney District are smoke free, as are the three hotels of Disneyland Resort:  Disneyland Hotel, The Grand Californian, and Disney’s Paradise Pier.

In the early days of Disneyland, smoking was permitted everywhere in the park except on the attractions themselves and in their wait queues. The park brochure at the time stated: “You can put out your cigarette in the ashtrays conveniently located at the entrance to every attraction.” In 1955, 52% of men and 24% of women were smokers, whereas today only about 14% of adults smoke. Walt Disney himself was a heavy smoker who eventually died of lung cancer.

Secrets of Disney World’s Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom

Think you know a lot about the Haunted Mansion at Disney World?

The ride is in the part that guests can’t see from in front of the mansion.

Think on this: The mansion you see out front is not where you ride on the attraction at all!

Taking a Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Haunted Mansion

One of my favorite rides at MK!

One of my favorite rides at MK!

When I was a cast member at Disney World, I got to go on a behind-the-scenes, aka “backstage”, tour of one of my favorite rides at the Magic Kingdom – The Haunted Mansion!!

hm pass

My HM backstage pass.

Always room for one more....

Always room for one more….;)

So, if you know me at all, you know that I am not an early riser.  When I first saw that the meeting time for the tour was at 6:40am…..ugh, no thank you!  But, it is one of my all time favorite rides, so I HAD to do it!

We were running late and I got a text from another CP in the group which said, “If you can catch up to us in the Utilidors, then you can be in the tour.  If not, then you can just go home.”  WHAT??!!!  Not very nice, and very stressful to read!

Sara and I parked and ran through the Utilidors and kept getting stopped by other cast members because we looked so lost and were wearing our street clothes.  But we did it!!! We found the group and made it on the tour!!

DAK cast members on HM Backstage tour.

DAK cast members on HM Backstage tour.

The old woman who did our tour was perfect for her role.  She has the highest seniority at the Haunted Mansion and has worked there for 17 years.  17 YEARS!!!!  She was extremely intimidating and unfriendly to say the least.

She began her tour by telling us that if we couldn’t keep the chatter down, then she’d end the tour early.   Hilarious, as the average age of our group was around 35.  She acted like we were a school tour of 2nd graders.

Note:  She said that we could take as many photos as we wanted AND use flash photography if we needed to!!!

DSCN0825

Portrait of the ‘Master of the Mansion’

We started out by doing a walking tour of the entire ride with the lights on.  We got to stay in each room as she pointed out interesting details and facts of the room.

Something I had heard before was that during the 2007 renovation, seven hidden Jack Skellingtons were added to the HM ride.  The first one is in this photo in the first HM room.  Jack can be found in the wrinkles above the left eyebrow.

DSCN0827

Same portrait as above, but with lights on.

So creepy looking!

Here is a photo of our entire DAK group.  They told us to make a scared/frightened face!    I think mine is the best.   😉

10153699_10101577326746487_4441039902454031229_n

Boo!

After we watched the first scene in the stretching room, we all got to lay down and watch as the room slowly folded in on itself!  So scary!  And weird.  I bet no one has ever seen this room so empty!

There are 160 black “Doom Buggies” that move through the 10 minutes of the spookiest rooms in all of the Magic Kingdom!

DSCN0836

The long hallway of the Portrait Gallery….this is the first floor of the HM.

I love this scene!  It is so cool how the eyes all watch you as you move along.  We actually got to go up and touch the heads!  The trick is that the faces are actually concave into the other side of the wall.  It’s just a trick your eyes play on you as you move across the room.

There are two Jack Skellingtons in this room.  They are near the chair.  One is a picture of Jack on a book cover and the other is just Jack’s head on the spine of a book.

The Library with watching busts and 1 crow.

Next time you’re in this scene, check out how creepy the coffin is!  There are hidden skulls around it.

Haunted mansion

The Glass Conservatory with coffin.

Also, we got to pet the scarecrow!  It was surprisingly soft.  The original concept of the HM ride was to have the crow follow along with you and narrate the ride.  That plan was scraped, but you can still see the crow in every scene.

I LOVE this part of the ride!  Especially when the evil hand shadow crosses it!

Haunted Mansion

Tick, tock…The 13th hour clock…the Witching Hour.  See the eyes watching you???

Several people have tried to jump out of their Doom buggies to steal the ball every year. Apparently the going rate online for it is $500,000.  However, what you can’t see is that between the railing and the table is actually nothing!  It drops down to the floor below.

There was a guy who jumped over to the table, but missed.  He fell and broke his arm and kept screaming “Help! I can’t get out!” which, if you know Haunted Mansion, is exactly what the guy in the coffin is saying!  He wasn’t discovered until the end of the night when the music was finally turned off and the lights turned on for cleaning. Ouch!

There are now grates to over the open area, but a few years ago, a high schooler on graduation night tried to jump across and landed on the grates.  Except he landed between two of the bars, broke through, and got stuck.  Because he was bigger, they had to pull him all the way through to get him out.  He ended up getting  about 70 stitches around his stomach.  Ouch!

Note the railing....

Note the railing in the circular Seance Room….

Sorry this is such a bad photo!  But I love this scene!  I love when the ride breaks down in this room because there is always so many interesting things to look at!

We got to see the dancers!!!

We got to see the ghost dancers!!!

The BEST part about our backstage tour was the guide gave us a special opportunity to actually go into the ballroom!  We got to walk around the table and look at all the actual ghosts which are being reflected through a series of mirrors into the ballroom.  We got to dance with the ghosts!  And to touch the plates and silverware on the table, and see the Hidden Mickey!  This was my coolest and most amazing WDW experience!!!!

ghost bride Haunted Mansion

The Ghost Bride

Our tour guide said that so far this year there have been 14 instances of people throwing human ashes during the HM ride, especially during the ballroom scene.  Each time it happens, it closes the ride for about four hours while custodial is called in to vacuum the ashes up!  Code HEPA….

Fire at Disneyland Last Night

***

fireA small fire erupted in a backstage area of Disneyland on Thursday night.

No one was injured in the fire, which occurred near the park’s iconic Fire Station building, the location of Walt Disney’s Apartment overlooking Main Street.

The fire station is not a real, working station, so a fire crew from the Anaheim Fire Department responded, putting out the fire within minutes.

The park remained open, but parts of Adventureland were closed due to an electrical outage.  The Walt Disney Railroad also suspended operations.

The fire was described as a “vegetation fire”, but we saw this exact spot during our Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour two weeks ago and there are some storage buildings there, along with a cast member break area.  When we were there, there were a few generators being stored there.

A Tropical Outpost for All

Explore the wilds of Adventureland and then kick back and enjoy delish dishes amidst this lush, trader’s market.

Nestled at the crossroads of Adventureland, The Tropical Hideaway is a new quick-service location featuring exotic eats and a place to rest for weary world travelers. Soak in the sights and sounds of this bustling bazaar-style atmosphere with a variety of food vendors offering sweet and savory meal options. It’s an exotic Adventureland experience like never before!

Wonderful Wildlife and Flickering Tiki Torches

Grab a bite, relax on the open-air dock along the Jungle Cruise waterfront, and meet Rosita, a friendly feathered “entertainer” who’s embarking on a solo career away from the bird chorus at Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.

Before this colorful cockatoo spreads her wings to tour the world, Rosita will tell jokes, deliver witty one-liners and recalls a time when The Tropical Hideaway was an unknown terrace frequented by locals. At sundown, the ambiance is transformed by flickering torch lights that illuminate your way through this truly enchanted setting!

Insider Tip:  This is located at the old Aladdin meet and greet location.  The tiled rug is still right in front welcoming you!
